A study has claimed that compounds that are present in plastics and lotions affect fertility levels in men.
For the study, federal researchers studied the impact of everyday chemicals on fertility by tracking 501 couples who were trying to have children for four years. One of their findings stood out;they found that both men and women were exposed to certain chemicals, which made one more likely to suffer from fertility problems.
Certain compounds like phthalates that are used to make plastics more flexible as well as cosmetic lotions more smooth to slide on can greatly affect fertility levels. Women who usually wear cosmetics have higher levels of phthalates in their body. However, only in males were high levels of phthalate level correlated with infertility.
Phthalates are from a group of industrial compounds that are called endocrine disruptors because they interefere with the body's endocrine system that governs the production as well as distribution of hormones throughout the body.
The chemicals can also cause a lot of health problems such as diabetes, birth defects and cancers.
