Can Popcorn Cause Lung Disease? Know About Symptoms Of Popcorn Popcorn Lung Disease

Popcorn lung, medically known as bronchiolitis obliterans, is a rare and serious respiratory condition that gained attention due to its association with certain chemicals found in microwave popcorn flavourings.

People often believe that respiratory diseases are only caused by smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, breathing polluted air, and an unhealthy lifestyle. However, did you know that even people who consume popcorn are at risk of a serious lung disease? Dr Sameer, a senior physician at Babu Ishwar Sharan Hospital, says, "The use of flavours in popcorn poses a risk of a serious disease called popcorn lung, medically known as Bronchiolitis Obliterans. In this condition, there is scarring in the airways of the lungs, leading to the risk of several serious diseases."

Background on Popcorn Lung

Popcorn lung earned its colloquial name from an outbreak in the early 2000s among workers in microwave popcorn plants who were exposed to high levels of diacetyl, a chemical used for buttery flavouring. The inhalation of diacetyl vapours was linked to severe respiratory issues.

Symptoms of Popcorn Lung

Following are the symptoms of popcorn lung:

  • Coughing: Persistent and dry coughing is a common symptom of popcorn lung. It may start mildly and progressively worsen over time.
  • Shortness of Breath: Individuals with popcorn lung often experience difficulty breathing, especially during physical activities or exertion.
  • Wheezing: The narrowing of airways can lead to wheezing, a high-pitched sound produced during breathing.
  • Fatigue: Chronic fatigue is a symptom, and individuals may find themselves easily tired due to the strain on their respiratory system.
  • Chest Tightness: A feeling of tightness or discomfort in the chest can accompany popcorn lung symptoms.

Causes of Popcorn Lung

The primary cause of popcorn lung is exposure to harmful chemicals, particularly diacetyl. This compound, when inhaled in significant amounts, damages the small airways in the lungs, leading to the development of bronchiolitis obliterans. Workers in certain industries, such as flavouring or food processing plants, may be at an increased risk of developing popcorn lung due to prolonged exposure to these chemicals. While not directly linked, some studies suggest that smokers may be more susceptible to the harmful effects of diacetyl.

Preventive Measures

Employers in industries using diacetyl or similar chemicals should implement strict safety measures, including proper ventilation, personal protective equipment, and regular monitoring of air quality.

Governments and regulatory entities play critical roles in developing and enforcing workplace safety regulations. Raising awareness about the dangers of specific substances can help with prevention.

Individuals who smoke should consider stopping to prevent additional stress on their respiratory system and their susceptibility to diacetyl-related damage.

Medical Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Pulmonary Function Tests: Doctors may perform tests to assess lung function, including spirometry, to diagnose and monitor popcorn lung.
  • Cessation of Exposure: The primary treatment involves removing the individual from the source of exposure to prevent further lung damage.
  • Symptomatic Relief: Medications such as bronchodilators and corticosteroids may be prescribed to alleviate symptoms and reduce inflammation.

Popcorn lung is an uncommon but deadly respiratory illness caused by exposure to specific chemicals, most commonly diacetyl. To know the symptoms and reasons is important  for early detection and treatment. Prevention strategies, both at the workplace and at the individual level, can help to reduce the prevalence of popcorn lung and improve respiratory health. If symptoms appear, seeking immediate medical help is critical for effective diagnosis and treatment.
