8 Important Health Tests Women Over 40 Must Take

It is common to develop different health conditions as you age. Most of us visit our healthcare providers only when we are sick. However, you should conduct frequent health checkups, especially when you have crossed your 40s. This will help to detect health problems and encourage a healthy lifestyle which may cause a problem later. For instance, health checkups can help you detect if you have high blood pressure, which usually has no early symptoms.

Eight Essential Diagnostic Tests For Women

Breast Examination

The chances of having breast cancer increase as you age; therefore, a timely evaluation is recommended. You can get a mammogram or ultrasonography done to detect breast cancer. A home self-breast examination once every two weeks can help identify any lumps early on and prevent further tissue damage.

Blood Pressure Screening

High blood pressure is prevalent in most middle-aged women, which can increase the risk of stroke and heart attack if not examined. Therefore it is necessary to get a blood pressure screening.

Pap Smear Or Pelvic Examination

You should get a complete pelvic examination, Pap smear test and conduct tests for HPV to prevent the risk of cervical cancer. A Pap smear test helps to examine the cells in your cervix that can reveal your risk of developing cervical cancer. A pelvic exam can check your uterus, cervix, ovaries, vagina, and other reproductive organs.

Thyroid Test

Most women develop health conditions like hair loss, weight gain, and exhaustion in their middle age. A common cause for such conditions can be hypothyroidism. The thyroid is responsible for controlling the metabolism of your body. Women should get this test done once every three years after they have crossed 40.

Blood Sugar Level

Your chances of having diabetes increase if you have not been taking care of your diet during your youth. Eating unhealthy foods affects your pancreas and increases blood sugar levels. Therefore, you should check your blood sugar levels to treat diabetes.

Ovarian Cancer

Another common health condition that women aged 40 experience is ovarian cancer. This mainly occurs after menopause, when there is a change in the DNA cells of your body. You should get this test done before you reach menopause to prevent ovarian cancer.

Your bones lose density as you age which can lead to developing osteoporosis. This makes your bones brittle and weak and increases the chances of fracture and injury. Your bones' density can be determined with the help of a DEXA scan.

Cholesterol Screening

You should get a cholesterol screening done to measure cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. High cholesterol can increase the chances of cardiovascular diseases like stroke and heart attack.

Women in their 40s, mostly mothers who are more inclined towards taking care of their family, often end up neglecting their health. However, taking care of yourself is equally important as taking care of others. If you don't get yourself tested, you might end up encountering the disease at a later stage which can get difficult to treat. You need to get health checkups done to prevent and treat health conditions and live a healthy life.
