Stress can have a significant impact on sperm quality. Studies have shown that stress can reduce the number of sperm produced, as well as reduce the quality of the sperm. Stress can also cause changes in sperm morphology and motility. As a result, men who are under a lot of stress are more likely to have lower sperm counts and sperm of lower quality. 

How stress Affects Quality Of Sperm

A 2016 Danish study of 1,215 male participants found that greater self-reported stress was associated with reduced sperm volume, total sperm count, and sperm concentration, as well as a lower number of healthy looking sperm cells. Men with the highest stress levels had the most impacted metrics.

Another study found that males who had two or more stressful life events within a year found to have a lower percentage of sperm motility and a lower proportion of sperm with normal morphology than men who had no stressful life experiences.

In addition to reducing sperm quality, stress can also affect other aspects of male fertility. Stress can cause an increase in cortisol, a hormone that suppresses reproductive hormones and can lead to erectile dysfunction, lower libido, and even infertility. Oxidative or physiological stress can also leads to free radical damage which is associated with fertility and sperm quality.

One 2008 study examined the effects of stress therapy on sperm quality. The study separated 20 males into two groups: Group A received stress reduction therapy as treatment, while Group B received no treatment. The study found that males who received stress-reduction therapy (Group A) had considerably improved their sperm motility and healthy sperm cell count. This suggests that stress is a risk factor for male infertility.

Men need to manage their stress levels to maximise their fertility. This can be done through lifestyle changes such as exercise and relaxation techniques, as well as through therapies such as cognitive-behavioural therapy. If a man’s stress levels are too high, he may want to consider seeking medical advice from a fertility specialist. Following are the steps to manage stress:

Healthy habits, such as exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, getting adequate rest, and reducing stress, can help men to manage their overall wellbeing.
