Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder characterised by the rapid buildup of skin cells, resulting in the formation of thick, silvery scales, and red patches. This condition can be discomforting, which could interfere with your quality of life, much to the extent that it can even impact your heart. To learn more about this link, we spoke to Dr Rana Serbjeet Singh, Consultant Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital Salt Lake, Kolkata.
"The underlying immune dysfunction observed in psoriasis, where the body's defence mechanisms attack its tissues, extends beyond the skin. This autoimmune response can also affect blood vessels, potentially triggering inflammation and disruption," said Dr Singh. "Women are more frequently vulnerable to this disease than those of men," he added.
Psoriasis and Cardiovascular Diseases Risk
According to a study published by the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, psoriasis may contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction and stroke.
The complex interplay between psoriasis and cardiovascular health is an area of ongoing research. While the exact mechanisms remain to be fully studied, Dr Singh suggested that psoriasis's immune dysregulation and inflammation could contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Chronic Inflammation
Dr Singh said that one key pathway to consider to underpin this relationship is chronic inflammation. "Psoriasis patients often experience systemic inflammation, which can adversely affect blood vessels throughout the body," he added.
Formation of Plaques
"This inflammation may promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, contributing to the narrowing of arteries and increased risk of heart attacks," suggested the doctor.
Affect Adipose Tissue
"Additionally, psoriasis can affect adipose tissue, and the body's fat stores, potentially influencing cardiovascular health. Abnormal immune responses and inflammatory pathways could lead to the accumulation of fatty deposits in blood vessels, further exacerbating cardiovascular risk," explained Dr Singh.
Lifestyle Factors
He added that psoriasis-related cardiovascular risk may not solely result from the disease itself. "Lifestyle factors, including genetics, sedentary habits, and dietary choices, can compound the risk. Young adults, who had heart attacks due to a combination of these factors, could also face abnormal heart rhythms leading to cardiac arrest," he mentioned.
Diagnosis and Management of Psoriasis
"Early diagnosis of psoriasis and management of the diagnosis phase are two things to be taken care of," said Dr Singh. "Topical creams and medications that have been effective in reducing inflammatory risk are used on the majority of patients," suggested Dr Singh.

Dr Singh said that early diagnosis is important when the blood vessels begin to be affected by the use of steroids and other similar substances. "In that case, avoiding lipid-lowering drugs, anti-platelets, and attending a doctor are necessary steps to stop the immune system's abnormal behaviour," recommended the doctor.
"PSS is a specialised treatment involving creams, topical steroids, and special agents. New biological agents, called mabs, are also used to treat psoriasis, particularly those involving heart disease," said Dr Singh.
Conclusion
India offers specialised treatments for psoriasis, but not all are accessible to the general public. Modern medicines and advancements are available in specialised centres due to the advancement of research. But still, in India, this is not accessible to the general population.
Recognising these potential connections underscores the importance of holistic healthcare and strategies for psoriasis patients, focusing not only on skin management but also on overall cardiovascular health.
