During menstruation, many women experience a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including cramps, bloating, fatigue, and mood swings. This monthly occurrence, known as the menstrual cycle, involves the shedding of the uterine lining and is a natural part of reproductive health. Proper nutrition during menstruation is crucial not only for overall well-being but also for effectively managing these symptoms.
One question that frequently arises is whether avoiding cold foods during menstruation is beneficial. To shed light on this topic, we consulted Dr Tasneem Nishah Shah, Consultant and Clinical Lead, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital, Whitefield, Bengaluru, who explained the effects of consuming cold food during periods.
“The menstrual cycle is a natural process that involves hormonal changes and shedding of the uterine lining. Proper nutrition is essential during menstruation to support overall health and manage menstrual symptoms effectively”, said Dr Shah.
Consuming Cold Food During Periods
“Consuming cold food during periods may disrupt digestion and lead to bloating, cramps, and discomfort in some women. This is because cold food can constrict blood vessels, affecting blood flow to the uterus and potentially exacerbating menstrual cramps. Hence, avoiding cold food during periods can help alleviate menstrual symptoms and improve overall comfort”, said Dr Shah.
Research supports the notion that consuming warm foods during menstruation may contribute to improved symptom management and well-being. A study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research found that warm food consumption was associated with reduced menstrual pain intensity and duration compared to cold food consumption. “While existing studies provide valuable insights, further research could delve deeper into the mechanisms underlying the effects of warm food on menstrual health”, highlighted Dr Shah.

What You Should Do?
Dr Shah listed some dietary tips that you should follow to manage your menstrual symptoms as follows:
Opt for warm soups, herbal teas, and cooked vegetables to support digestion and comfort during menstruation. These choices can help alleviate discomfort and promote a sense of well-being during this time.
Ensure a balanced diet rich in nutrients like iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamins to promote menstrual health and well-being. According to a 2018 research conducted among university students in Spain, it was found that vegetarian diets and increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables correlated with experiencing fewer cramps and alleviating menstrual pain.

“Iron, in particular, is important during menstruation as blood loss can lead to iron deficiency anaemia in some women. Foods rich in iron include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, spinach, and fortified cereals. Calcium and magnesium are also crucial for muscle function and may help alleviate menstrual cramps. Dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains are excellent sources of these minerals”, highlighted Dr Shah.
“Stay hydrated with room-temperature water. Pay attention to how your body responds to different foods during menstruation and adjust your diet accordingly for optimal comfort”, added Dr Shah. Cold drinks can potentially worsen cramps by causing muscles to contract. Being mindful of how your body responds to different foods during menstruation can help you make informed dietary choices for optimal comfort.
Seek advice from healthcare professionals or nutritionists to create a personalised dietary plan that supports your menstrual health.
Bottomline
Dr Shah concluded, “While the impact of cold food consumption during menstruation may vary from person to person, opting for warm, nourishing options can contribute to better symptom management and overall comfort. By prioritising proper nutrition and making informed dietary choices, women can support their menstrual health and well-being effectively.”
