Conversation With Cancer Survivors: Here's How We Can prevent Cancer

The journey of a cancer patient is overwhelming and filled with anxiety, stress, frustration, loneliness, and fear. Right from the moment of diagnosis to taking treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the disease tests your tolerance at every stage. However, the fight against cancer requires patience, hope, resilience, and courage. However, survivors eventually battle the cancer and emerge stronger emotionally and mentally. They become more empathetic towards others.  National Cancer Survivors Day is observed every year on the first Sunday of June to celebrate the survivors who fight it with sheer grit and positivity. Dr Gaurav Jaswal, MD Radiation Oncology, Director Radiation Oncology, TGH Onco-Life Hospitals Talegaon, gives some vital tips for survivors to stay healthy and hearty and improve their quality of life.

Survivors should follow these essential tips without fail

Cancer is a word that evokes fear and uncertainty, but for those who have battled and survived this formidable disease, it is also a testament to their strength, resilience, and unwavering hope. The journey of a cancer survivor is one marked by challenges, triumphs, and an unyielding spirit to overcome the odds.

Adhere to a well-balanced lifestyle

“One should eat a nutritious diet inclusive of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, and lentils. Stay hydrated by drinking water, soups, and broths. Cut down on processed, sugary, canned, and oily foods. It will be imperative for the survivors to exercise at least 5 times a day for 30 minutes. Do light activities such as walking or yoga. It is not at all a good idea to work out rigorously,” said Dr Jaswal.

Prioritise self-care

One will have to take utmost care of himself/herself after battling cancer.  Survivors are often traumatised after the diagnosis and treatment. It is better to try relaxation techniques such as meditation, and breathing exercises, and pamper yourself as and when needed. Try to learn a new skill, take up hobbies, and spend some quality time with your family.

Don’t miss follow-ups

Regular check-ups and follow-ups with your doctor will help to know your health status and address any issues on time. For survivors, it will be necessary to be in touch with oncologists, psychologists, and physical therapists, and take rehabilitation without fail. Survivors need to take charge of their health and ensure they don’t ignore any changes occurring in the body. Report any symptoms to the doctor to be able to seek timely intervention.

Stick to cancer prevention measures

“If you are required to go for screening tests as recommended by the doctor then don't skip them. One has to listen to the doctor to ensure improved overall well-being. Furthermore, take routine vaccinations and adopt strategies to reduce the risk of cancers, such as avoiding smoking, tobacco, and drug abuse. It is possible to fight cancer with timely diagnosis, and treatment,” Dr Jaswal said.
