Endometrial Cancer Cannot Be Completely Prevented, But Here Are 5 Things That Can Help Reduce Risk

Endometrial cancer has become a serious health risk for women, affecting hundreds of thousands globally each year. While early detection offers high survival rates through surgery, advanced cases become much harder to treat.

Endometrial cancer occurs when cells in the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, start to grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour. While there is no denying that some women are at a greater risk of developing this type of cancer than others, The good news is that there are ways to reduce the risk and lead a healthy life.

Who Is Most At Risk Of Endometrial Cancer?

According to Dr Amrita Razdan Kaul, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Asian Hospital, Faridabad, some of the factors that increase the risk of endometrial cancer include:

  • Endometrial hyperplasia, an abnormal thickening of the endometrium (line of the uterus)
  • Diabetes
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Obesity

"Certain malignancies, such as endometrial cancer, are also influenced by the hormone oestrogen, which helps in the development and maintenance of female sex characteristics," she told the OnlyMyHealth team.

She further added that women who have a family history of endometrial cancer or who have certain genetic disorders like Lynch syndrome are more likely to acquire the condition.

Can Endometrial Cancer Be Prevented?

Endometrial cancer cannot be completely prevented, said Dr Kaul.

However, there are several things that can be done to reduce the likelihood of developing the illness, she noted.

The five most effective strategies include:

Using hormonal contraceptives

Combined oral contraceptives that include progestin and oestrogen can reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Being pregnant and breastfeeding lowers oestrogen levels, offering protection against endometrial cancer.

Bariatric surgery

"It is not known whether the risk of endometrial cancer is decreased with reducing weight; however, the risk of endometrial cancer is reduced by bariatric surgery, which modifies your digestive system to help you lose weight," said Dr Kaul.

Regular exercise

Engaging in regular physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, which may help reduce the incidence of endometrial cancer. In fact, a 2015 meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Epidemiology found that higher levels of physical activity in women were associated with a 20% lower risk of endometrial cancer.

Healthy Diet

Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help manage weight and potentially reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. Research warns against the increase in the consumption of total fat and saturated fat intake, as it is linked to an increased risk of endometrial cancer. On the other hand, cohort studies with a larger number of participants hint at a possible benefit from monounsaturated fatty acids, showing an association with a lower risk of cancer.

Conclusion

Endometrial cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women worldwide. Unfortunately, there is no sure way to prevent endometrial cancer. But it is crucial to understand that adopting a healthy lifestyle and taking certain precautions can help reduce the risk of developing the disease. Additionally, go for regular screenings to detect any abnormalities in your reproductive system. Moreover, early diagnosis can ensure effective treatment with a positive outcome.
