How To Know If Your Jaw Pain Is Linked To Ear Infection?

An ear infection can be painful, and so can jaw pain. But what if these two issues are connected? In many cases, ear infections and jaw pain are linked due to the close proximity of the ear and jaw structures. So if you have pain in one area, it can radiate to the neighbouring parts, according to Dr H K Susheen Dutt, Senior Consultant – ENT Specialist, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. This suggests that infections in the middle or inner ear can cause inflammation that affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to pain in the jaw. But then, how do you know whether an ear infection is the source of your jaw pain? Read to find out.

How To Know If Your Jaw Pain Is Caused By An Ear Infection

There are many factors that can lead to jaw pain and discomfort. These include Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder, tooth pain, trigeminal neuralgia, a condition caused by nerve compression, sinus problems, and even a heart attack.

However, ear infections can also lead to jaw pain due to the close proximity of the areas. This connection is common because the nerves and tissues surrounding the ear and jaw are closely intertwined, meaning that discomfort in one area can easily spread to the other. Therefore, it is crucial to always consider the possibility of an ear infection if your jaw is in distress.

To know whether the two are linked, Dr Dutt advises watching out for accompanying symptoms like earache, fever, or ear discharge. Additionally, if jaw pain worsens with ear movements like chewing or swallowing, it could indicate a connection, he adds.

You can also visit an ENT specialist to confirm your diagnosis and receive proper treatment.

Differences Between TMJ Disorder and Ear Infection-Related Jaw Pain

Both TMJ disorder and ear infection can cause jaw pain; however, the two are completely different conditions.

While ear infections can be caused by illnesses like the cold or flu that block the throat, nasal passages, or Eustachian tubes, TMD can be caused by teeth grinding, stress, an uneven bite, a blow to the head or face, or wear and tear of the joint.

Besides jaw pain, a TMD can lead to other symptoms like jaw clicking, popping, or grinding noises, headaches around the temples, and difficulty opening the mouth fully.

On the other hand, ear infections can lead to persistent earaches, tinnitus, poor hearing, recurring headaches, and ear discharge.

Treatments To Seek

Treatments for ear infections usually include antibiotics for bacterial infections, pain management with analgesics or ear drops, and warm compresses to relieve discomfort, says Dr Dutt.

He adds that for associated jaw pain, treatments like jaw exercises, mouth guards, or TMJ therapy may be recommended.

However, it is always crucial to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment, the doctor concludes.
