According to Dr Rahul Singh, MBBS, MS, DNB, ICO, Department of Ophthalmology, Noida International Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Noida International University, vitamin A synthesises a light-sensitive pigment called rhodopsin, which helps the eye see in dim light.
Additionally, the doctor told the OnlyMyHealth team that the nutrient also helps keep the corneas clear and moist while strengthening the eyes' defence system and providing protection against infections and potential threats.
Why Vitamin A Deficiency Causes Eye-Related Issues

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a severe form of or untreated vitamin A deficiency can make the cornea very dry, leading to corneal and retinal damage and causing blindness.
An estimated 2.5–5 lakh children who are vitamin A-deficient become blind every year, and half of them die within 12 months of losing their sight, notes the global health body.
Dr Singh said, “Prolonged deficiency may escalate to severe conditions like xerophthalmia, potentially causing corneal damage and, in extreme cases, vision loss.”
How To Increase Vitamin A Levels In The Body
According to Dr Singh, elevating vitamin A levels can be achieved through a combination of dietary and lifestyle strategies.
“A pivotal approach involves incorporating vitamin A-rich foods into the daily diet. This includes the consumption of sweet potatoes, carrots, and spinach, as well as a variety of brightly coloured vegetables and fruits,” he said.

He added, “Maintaining a balanced diet is equally crucial, ensuring a harmonious blend of vitamins and minerals. This can be achieved by integrating healthy fats from sources such as nuts, olive oil, and seeds into one's dietary regimen.”
Moreover, limiting alcohol intake is also a factor to consider when it comes to preventing vitamin A deficiency. As per Dr Singh, it helps in optimising vitamin A absorption. “By limiting alcohol consumption, the body can enhance the bioavailability of carotenoids, thus fostering effective utilisation of this vital nutrient,” he said.
When it comes to maintaining optimum vitamin A levels, besides following proper dietary measures, maintaining a healthy lifestyle by indulging in regular exercise, practising proper hydration, and getting sufficient sleep is instrumental, the doctor concluded.
