Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces abnormally too much of the thyroid hormone. This hormone regulate many metabolic processes in the body, and when it  is produced in excessive amounts it can cause various health conditions including irregular heart rate, anxiety, irritability, muscle weakness, hair loss, weight loss, and fatigue. It is important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing any of these symptoms as it can be a sign of hyperthyroidism.

As per Dr. Sujeet Jha, Principal Director of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Obesity, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland causing it to produce excessive thyroid hormone. Other causes of hyperthyroidism include thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland), nodules on the thyroid gland, or certain medications.

How Hyperthyroidism Affects Your Health

Hyperthyroidism can have a wide range of effects on our health, both physical and mental.

According to Dr Sujet, physically, hyperthyroidism can cause irregular heart rate, excessive sweating, weight loss, fatigue, difficulty in falling asleep, and tremors. It can also cause hair loss, skin changes, and bulging eyes. Hyperthyroidism can also lead to weakened bones and a decrease in fertility.

If we talk about the mental effects of hyperthyroidism then it can cause mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression. It can also cause memory loss and trouble while focusing. Hyperthyroidism can lead to a potentially fatal illness known as thyroid storm in severe situations.

Dietary Changes In Hyperthyroidism

According to clinical dietician Heena Fatima, lifestyle changes such as reducing stress and eating a healthy diet can also help reduce these symptoms.

Egg Whites

Egg whites are included in low-iodine foods, which can be beneficial to hyperthyroid patients. With such a health situation, a well-balanced diet can always be beneficial. As a result, egg whites should be consumed while egg yolks should be avoided.

Honey

Honey is not only good for your skin, but it is also good for your health. A low-iodine diet aids in the reduction of excess thyroid hormones. Also, honey is a poor supply of iodine, which is beneficial in hyperthyroidism. You can also put a few drops in your tea.

Almond milk

Hyperthyroidism can cause bone weakening in addition to weakness. Calcium and Vitamin D are both essential elements for the body. When dairy products are advised to be avoided, almond milk can be used as a replacement, although it is not the best source of calcium and vitamin D.
