How Effective Is Boric Acid In Treating Yeast Infection: Know From An Expert

A vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called candida. It leads to heavy and smelly discharge, intense itchiness in the intimate areas, a burning sensation, and vaginal rash, which can leave you distressed. Usually, antifungal cream, ointment, or over-the-counter (OTC) medications prescribed by a doctor can help treat the condition. However, boric acid vaginal suppositories may also help treat yeast infections. Here's what they are...

What Exactly Is Boric Acid?

Boric acid is a water-soluble white substance that comes in a powder or crystal form. It is a combination of oxygen, boron, and hydrogen, and is said to contain antifungal and antibacterial properties, as per research.

As per MedicineNet, diluted boric acid solutions can be used to treat diaper rash, insect bites and stings, and sunburns. In addition, boric acid suppositories are said to benefit people with yeast infection.

Can It Treat Yeast Infection?

Ideally, Clotrimazole or Fenticonazole containing vaginal pessaries, or oral fluconazole or itraconazole are used to treat vaginal fungal infections, says Dr Ashwini Bhalerao Gandhi, Consultant-Gynaecologist, PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mahim. However, she shares that boric acid can also be used to treat vaginal yeast infection.

Several researches back this claim.

A 2011 review published in the Journal of Women's Health involved 14 studies, two of which were randomised clinical trials, whereas nine were case series, and four of them case reports. It was found the boric acid use led to cure rates varying between 40-100%, with no major differences in yeast infection recurrence rates. The study concluded that boric acid is a safe and affordable alternative to other yeast infection treatments.

Another recent study, published in the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Journal Of The American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association, found that boric acid improves symptoms and was effective in managing recurrence of the infection.

Prevention Is Key

When it comes to yeast infection, it is best to prevent it. Here are some measures you can take, according to Dr Gandhi:

Maintain proper hygiene: Wash the genital area with mild soap and water regularly, and ensure it's thoroughly dried after.

Wear breathable fabrics: Choose cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow air circulation, which helps keep the area dry.

Avoid tight clothing: Tight clothes can create a warm, moist environment that's conducive to yeast growth.

Practise good personal hygiene during menstruation: Change sanitary pads or tampons frequently, and consider using breathable, cotton-based options.

Avoid douching: Douching can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, making it more susceptible to infections.

Limit sugar and refined carbohydrates: Yeast feeds on sugar, so reducing the intake of sugary foods and beverages can help prevent overgrowth.

Stay well-hydrated: Proper hydration supports a healthy immune system, which can help prevent infections.

Use probiotics: Consuming foods rich in probiotics, like yoghurt with live cultures, can help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the body.

Practise safe sex: Using condoms can reduce the risk of transmitting or acquiring infections.

Avoid irritants: Stay away from harsh soaps, perfumes, and scented products in the genital area, as they can disrupt the natural balance.

Change out of wet clothing promptly: Avoid sitting in damp swimsuits or workout clothes for extended periods.

Manage stress: High stress levels can weaken the immune system, making it easier for infections to occur.

Conclusion

Boric acid is considered an age-old remedy for fungal infections and recurrent yeast infection. In recent times, it is available as an OTC medicine or as vaginal capsules and suppositories. However, ensure that you speak to your doctor before resorting to any treatment, medications, or suppositories.
