To understand the connection between junk food and mental health, OnlyMyHealth interacted with Delrina Mohta, Clinical Psychologist and School Counsellor, Mumbai. 

The Downside of Sugars and Fats

According to Mohta, junk food is notorious for its high content of refined sugars and unhealthy fats. While these ingredients may satisfy our taste buds momentarily, they wreak havoc on our mental well-being. “Refined sugars cause rapid spikes and subsequent crashes in blood sugar levels, leading to irritability, fatigue, and mood swings. This sugar can make it challenging to maintain a stable, positive mood throughout the day,” she added.

Moreover, the addictive properties of sugar are well-documented. These addictive substances can help you relieve stress. This temporary high can create a cycle of dependency, where we reach for more junk food to regain that fleeting sense of pleasure, ultimately exacerbating feelings of stress and anxiety.

Nutrient Deficiency and Brain Function

Junk food typically lacks essential nutrients crucial for brain function. Mohta said, “Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in whole foods play vital roles in cognitive processes and emotional regulation. For instance, omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in foods like fish and flaxseeds, are essential for brain health and have been linked to lower rates of depression and anxiety.” Adding, she said, “Junk food, being deficient in these nutrients, can lead to impaired cognitive functioning and emotional instability.”

Gut-Brain Connection

Your gut and brain are closely connected, a relationship often referred to as the gut-brain axis. A diet high in junk food can disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria in your gut, leading to inflammation and negatively affecting your mental health. Conversely, a diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and healthy fats supports a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn supports better mental health.

The link between unhealthy eating habits and mental health disorders, particularly depression, is increasingly evident. Research has demonstrated that individuals who consume high amounts of junk food are more likely to experience symptoms of depression compared to those who maintain a balanced diet rich in whole foods.

An unbalanced diet heavy on junk food can also affect concentration and memory. Studies have shown that eating unhealthy foods can lead to depression and other mental health issues. According to a study published by the National Institute of Health, In contrast, a diet rich in processed and "unhealthy" foods was linked to an increased risk of psychiatric symptoms and disorders.

A study found that people who regularly ate fast food were 51% more likely to develop depression than those who seldom consumed these foods. The lack of essential nutrients, combined with the presence of unhealthy fats and sugars, contributes to this increased risk.
