What is Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum?
Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a birth defect which affects the structure that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. In this condition the two hemispheres of the brain (the corpus callosum) is partially or completely absent. The condition can occur in combination with other cerebral abnormities, including Arnold-Chiari malformation, Dandy-Walker syndrome, Andermann syndrome, schizenecephaly and holoprosencephaly. Females suffer from a gender-specific condition caller Aicardi’s syndrome, which cause severe mental retardation, seizures, abnormities in vertebra of the spine and on the retina of the eye.
Causes of Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum
Agenesis of the corpus callosum is caused by a disruption to the development of the fetal brain between the 3rd and 12th weeks of pregnancy. In many cases, the cause of ACC or other callosal disorder is not possible to be known. But, according to research the suggested causes of ACC may be chromosome errors, inherited genetic factors, prenatal infections or injuries, prenatal toxic exposures, structural blockage by cysts or brain abnormalities and metabolic disorders.
Prevention from ACC
There is no standard course of treatment for ACC. Treatment usually involves management of symptoms and seizures if they occur.
