Hysteria can be easily treated and cured if the treatment started at the right time. What is this problem and how to protect it, shares Clinical psychologist Dr Jayanti Dutta
It is also important for the mind to be healthy like the body, but due to lack of awareness of health problems, people do not understand the severity of mental health related diseases. Hysteria is also a similar problem. Hysteria is a neurotic disease, which is a psychological problem related to the youth. Most of the cases of hysteria are seen in women with the most prominent symptoms. However, sometimes, men are also vulnerable to it.
Hysteria is broadly divided into two stages:
- In the first stage, the condition is not known with little symptoms.
- In the second stage, the patient's body automatically starts experiencing symptoms of major illnesses. The patient may lose sight, changes in voice, even paralysis where the patient might witness inability to move hands and feet.
The interesting part about this disease is that it is extremely difficult to understand this medical condition. It may happen that hysteria disease may go unnoticed even by a physician in the first few sittings. Some common exams of hysteria can be sudden inactiveness before examinations due to fear. In medical language, this syndrome is known as histrionic paralysis and is segmented under a psychological condition.
Understanding Hysteria Disease
Sudden unconsciousness is a major symptom of this disease. In most of the cases, it is also mistaken for epilepsy for this particular symptom. However, this situation is totally different from what people feel generally. Hysteria is much easier to treat as it is a psychological issue. However, in epilepsy, the cells of the central nervous system start deteriorating rapidly, and can often lead to deaths.
Hysteria can happen due to excessive mental stress and a stressful surrounding, dilemma situations or an aftereffect of a shock or an accident. Those who hold their desires a lot can also have such a problem. According to a research done in this context, repressed sexual desires can also lead to hysteria disease in several individuals. This disease can also be caused by fear or guilt.
Investigation and treatment
Depending on the intensity of hysteria disease, psycho-diagnostic testing, EEG and neurological tests are required to analyse the signs of hysteria. These tests are essential to be done if there neurological problems in the brain are suspected. The investigation process is a little strenuous and may take longer duration for its diagnosis and complete treatment. The treatment can only be initiated once the disease is diagnosed properly and the stage of the disease is known. For proper detection, methods like psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and supportive drug therapy are adopted. Family therapy is also used when required.
In cases where an individual is diagnosed of hysteria, the whole family is given therapy and is told to attend counselling sessions to enhance the treatment procedure of the patient. The most important part of treatment of hysteria in patients is to understand the root cause of the problem. In cases where tension prevails in family, experts work towards enhancing the home environment for the patient. As soon as the treatment starts, its positive effects on the patients can be seen if the treatment is initiated at the right time. Therefore, do not ignore the symptoms and contact a psychologist without delay to reach till the root cause of hysteria in patients.
Following are some of the responsibilities that lie with the family of the patient suffering from hysteria:
- If someone in the family suffers from consistent episodes of blackouts, the treatment should be started without any delay.
- Do not leave the patient alone and listen carefully to all the things he/she says.
- Stay calm and do not take any of the things said by the patient to your heart. It might happen that the person suffering from hysteria might say something inappropriate. Understand the situation and help him/her get out of the situation.
- Try to engage the victim in activities related to his interest.
