Heidi Klum Reveals She's Starting A Worm And Parasite Cleanse: How Does It Work?

German-American model and TV personality Heidi Klum recently revealed that she is starting a worm and parasite cleanse with her husband, Tom Kaulitz.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the Project Runway host shared, "I'm going to deworm and de-parasite for the first time. Everything I'm getting on my Instagram feed at the moment is about worms and parasites. So I'm doing a worm cleanse and parasite cleanse with my husband. I heard that you’re supposed to do this once a year, and I’ve never done it. So I feel like I’m really behind. I don’t know what the heck is going to come out.”

According to the 52-year-old supermodel, everyone has worms and parasites in their body.

“If you are someone who eats raw things every now and then, like, for example, sushi. There are pills [to get rid of them],” she explained to the media outlet. “They have all of these herbs. There’s a lot of clove in there. The parasite hates clove. They also hate the seeds from a papaya. We have all this metal inside of us, and it’s also very important that you use this de-metalling stuff.”

“I’m starting this now, and you have to do this for months,” she added. “It’s like a whole thing.”

Understanding Parasitic Infections

1

Parasites are microorganisms that feed off of other organisms to survive. Parasitic infections are conditions caused by these parasites.

They can spread through contaminated food and water, insect bites, sexual or skin contact, or undercooked meat.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than three lakh people living in the US are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, and more than 300 infected babies are born every year. Additionally, at least 14% of the US population has been exposed to Toxocara, the parasite that causes toxocariasis, and each year at least 70 people, mostly children, are blinded by the resulting eye disease.

How Does A Worm And Parasite Cleanse Work?

A worm and parasite cleanse helps get rid of microorganisms that may have made their way into your gut through contaminated food, water, or poor hygiene. While the idea can sound a bit unsettling, it’s more common than most people think.

Some go the natural route with herbs like black walnut, wormwood, or clove, while others use doctor-prescribed medications to clear them out.

The process usually involves more than just taking pills or herbs. It often means cleaning up your diet too, which includes cutting back on sugar and processed foods and adding more fibre to improve bowel movement. Some people also include probiotics or gut-friendly foods to support digestion during the cleanse.

A 2024 review published in the Journal of Parasitic Diseases found that probiotic therapy may help treat parasitic infections by increasing the healthy bacteria in the gut. Another review suggested that certain nutritional supplements like vitamin A, zinc, and selenium may reduce the severity of parasitic infections.

  • Fever and fatigue
  • Skin rashes and itching
  • Neurological symptoms like headaches and seizures

Conclusion

Parasitic infections are a significant health concern, yet the popular notion of a worm and parasite cleanse requires careful consideration. It is important to consult a doctor or medical professional before starting any antiparasitic regimen. A professional evaluation is crucial to confirm a diagnosis with parasitic disease, weigh the potential risks and benefits, and select a safe, evidence-based course of action.
