A heat wave has taken a toll on Delhi after weeks of thunderstorms and dust-winds. A hasty rise in the temperature of the city has left people with dehydration and heatstroke.
Heatstroke is a condition when the body is unable or has no effective ways left to lower the body temperature in extensive heat. The body sweats to lower down the body temperature however when a person spends too much time in the heat without taking in enough fluids, the body may no longer be able to effectively control the temperature.
The scorching sun can leave you dehydrated. Drinking as many fluids as you can is recommended by experts. The loss of significant amount of fluids along with essential salts and minerals from the body leads to dehydration. People who struggle with excessive sweat during the summer are at higher risk of suffering from dehydration. Here are some tips to stay hydrated in teh scorching weather:
Do you sweat a lot during summers? In that case, drinking adequate water should be the most important thing on your radar. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water in a day.
Diuretics are substances or foods that increase urine production which in turn results in loss of fluids from the body. Beverages like coffee, cola and chocolate are some common diuretics.
Your body also loses a huge amount of electrolytes along with water which is needed to replenish the body. You need to add potassium-rich foods including bananas, pineapples, sweet potatoes, coconut water and mangoes in your diet.
Avoid Spicy Food
Spicy foods are not only known to cause health problems like acidity and heartburn, but they also increase the internal body temperature thereby resulting in loss of body fluids. Hence, avoid hopping on spicy foods to keep dehydration at bay.
Nothing could prevent dehydration better than staying indoors as direct exposure to the sun naturally causes you to sweat more. When you sweat more you tend to lose fluids from your body and become dehydrated. Thus it is best to avoid going out in the afternoon when the temperature is high.
