We all know that blood plays an important role in maintaining optimal health. This is because it acts as a transportation system for nutrients, oxygen, and waste products. Therefore, keeping our blood clean and free from toxins becomes a necessity. While the body has its mechanisms for cleansing the blood, adopting healthy habits can support and enhance this process. Here are some effective and natural ways to purify your blood. We spoke to our expert Dr Shuchin Bajaj, Founder Director, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, who listed healthy ways to clean your blood.
Ways To Purify Your Blood
Stay Hydrated
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to cleanse your blood is by staying hydrated. It is vital to drink enough water to flush out toxins from your bloodstream and organs. “Therefore, make sure you drink at least eight glasses of water a day to keep your blood flowing smoothly and to support the body's natural detoxification processes”, said Dr Bajaj.
Eat a Balanced Diet
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains provides essential nutrients that support blood purification. Dr Bajaj added, “Add foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, spinach, kale, and citrus fruits, which help neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the blood. Also, foods high in fibre, like beans, lentils, and whole grains, aid in digestion and help eliminate toxins from the body.”

Limit Processed Foods and Sugar
Did you know processed foods and excessive sugar consumption can contribute to inflammation and toxin buildup in the blood? Hence, limit your intake of processed snacks, sugary beverages, and refined carbohydrates, which can spike blood sugar levels and disrupt metabolic processes. Instead, opt for whole, nutrient-dense foods that nourish your body and support overall health.
Exercise Regularly
“Regular physical activity is not only beneficial for cardiovascular health but also plays a crucial role in blood purification. Exercise enhances blood circulation, increasing nutrient and oxygen delivery to cells and enabling waste products and toxins to be removed”, said Dr Bajaj. You should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week to keep your blood flowing and your body detoxified.
Practice Deep Breathing and Meditation
Stress can have a profound impact on overall health, including blood purity. Increasing inflammation and hormonal imbalances caused by chronic stress can interfere with the body's ability to detoxify. Hence, practise stress-reducing techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or tai chi in your daily routine to promote relaxation and support healthy blood flow.
Get Sufficient Sleep
Dr Bajaj said, “The natural detoxification mechanisms of the body depend on getting enough quality sleep. While the body heals and regenerates itself, the brain eliminates poisons that have been collected throughout the day during sleep.” Hence, aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night to support optimal blood purification and overall health.

Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol Consumption
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can introduce toxins into the bloodstream and impair the body's ability to eliminate waste products effectively. Overconsumption of alcohol can significantly impair liver function, leading to the accumulation of fat, inflammation, and scarring, as stated in StatPearls.
Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake to support liver function and promote blood purification. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives, such as herbal teas, fresh juices, or sparkling water.
Consider Herbal Supplements
“Certain herbs and supplements have been traditionally used to support blood purification and detoxification. Milk thistle, dandelion root, burdock root, and turmeric are among the herbs known for their liver-protective and blood-cleansing properties,” added Dr Bajaj. However, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any herbal supplements to ensure they are safe and appropriate for you.
