What is Gond or Acacia Gum?

Gond, also known as acacia gum or gum Arabic, is a natural resin derived from specific trees, primarily the Acacia senegal tree. Its usage dates back centuries and spans across medicinal, culinary, and cosmetic applications. Today, gond is available in crushed, ground, or whole forms, often labelled as acacia gum in stores.

Acacia gum is known for its adhesive properties and is widely utilised as a stabiliser, thickening agent, and emulsifier. It is commonly found in foods, drinks, and skincare products.

Enhancement of Gut Health

Research indicates that it contributes positively to gut health, corroborating findings from previous studies over the years. This has shown it aids in alleviating gastrointestinal issues. Gum arabic is harvested from specific trees, like the Acacia senegal tree. It serves as a water-soluble source of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is a type of carbohydrate. It consists of the components of plant-based foods that the body is unable to digest or absorb.

This distinguishes it from other nutrients like fats, proteins, and various carbohydrates, including sugars and starches. The body can break down and absorb these nutrients. In contrast, fiber moves through the stomach, small intestine, and colon mostly unchanged, exiting the body afterwards.

Regulation of Blood Sugar Levels

The FDA  has acknowledged that acacia could be used safely as a thickening agent or other additive in alcoholic beverages at a maximum concentration of 20% in the final product. It has also been recognized as part of a healthy daily dietary fiber intake. The FDA mentioned that “acacia gum has beneficial physiological effects on human health, including reductions in blood glucose and insulin levels when consumed alongside carbohydrate-rich meals that elevate blood sugar levels.”

Pain Relief Properties

Studies indicate that acacia gum may possess pain-relieving qualities. Research published in the International Journal of Nephrology emphasized the antioxidant properties of gum arabic, which contribute to the neutralization of free radicals and a decrease in cancer risk. Moreover, it has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-proliferative effects on colorectal cancer cell lines.

Reduces plaque accumulation on teeth and gums

The antimicrobial properties of gum arabic may help reduce the buildup of dental plaque. Studies show that it can inhibit the growth of bacteria associated with plaque and gum diseases. Additionally, it has been proven to protect against cavities.

A study indicated that gum arabic extract effectively prevented the growth of Streptococcus mutans, a major bacterium responsible for the formation of dental plaque. Moreover, another study revealed that consistently using gum arabic as a chewing gum resulted in a significant decrease in plaque index scores among the participants.

Clinical research suggests that the regular consumption of gum arabic can greatly lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. For instance, a 2015 study involving Sudanese patients with high cholesterol levels showed that consistent intake of gum arabic led to notable declines in LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels among the participants.

In addition, another study found that gum arabic supplementation enhanced lipid profiles by reducing triglycerides and raising HDL cholesterol in individuals with sickle cell anemia.
