Suffering From Enlarged Prostate? Here Are Some Food To Avoid

An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition as men age. Diet can play a significant role in managing the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and incomplete bladder emptying. While certain foods can help alleviate symptoms, others might exacerbate them. “Benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH is a frequent illness affecting elderly men in which the prostate gland enlarges and causes urinary problems. As men age, hormonal changes lead their prostate glands to grow in size,” said  Dr Nitin Shrivastava, Sr Consultant - Urology, Kidney Transplant Program & Robotic Surgery, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram. Here’s a list of foods to avoid if you're suffering from an enlarged prostate:

1. Meat

3. Caffeine

Caffeine can irritate the bladder and exacerbate urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Try reducing coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages to see if symptoms improve.

4. Alcohol

Alcohol can also irritate the bladder and increase urinary symptoms. Limiting or avoiding alcohol can help manage symptoms of BPH.

5. Spicy Foods

Spicy foods are known to irritate the bladder for some people, which can worsen symptoms of BPH. If you notice a link between your symptoms and spicy food, it may be helpful to cut back.

6. Sugary Foods and Beverages

High sugar intake can contribute to weight gain and overall inflammation, potentially worsening BPH symptoms. Avoid sugary snacks, desserts, and soft drinks.

7. Processed Foods

High in salt and preservatives, processed foods can contribute to poorer overall health and exacerbate BPH symptoms. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods instead.

9. Saturated Fats

10. Soy Products

For some men, soy products might influence hormone levels due to their phytoestrogen content. However, the effect can vary widely, and soy may actually benefit others. Monitor how soy affects your symptoms and adjust accordingly.

Changing your diet to eliminate certain foods can help you manage your BPH symptoms. However, dietary adjustments should be paired with other lifestyle changes and medical therapies recommended by a healthcare specialist. Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, healthy grains, and lean proteins, as well as staying hydrated with plenty of water, can all help to manage the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
