A certain antiviral compound has been developed by Australian biotech firm Starpharma that can be incorporated into condoms to stem the spread of viruses. These condoms are capable of preventing pregnancies along with HIV, human papillomavirus and herpes.
These virus-killing condoms have been developed by the company Ansell, which has received Conformity Assessment Certification from Australia’s Therapeutic Goods, implying that they may be available to people in Australia within months. VivaGel is a condom of its type that provides a barrier protection and incorporates a proprietary antiviral compound in the lubricant.
The condoms can not only help people to reduce their risk of pregnancy, but also lower the risk of transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. The VivaGel will reduce the risk of exposure to viruses that can cause STIs; it has been shown in laboratory studies to inactive up to 99.9 percent of HIV, HPV and HSV.
