5 Navratri Fasting Tips For Pregnant Women

The nine-day Navratri festivity is all about colours and good food. The key ritual of this time of the year is fasting (in most North Indian states, this is not a strict fast that is maintained. Small amounts of fried foods, fruits, vegetables, and sweets are eaten throughout the Navratri fast). While it can be beneficial for health, one should also note their health status before they commence with a fast. Pregnant women are mostly advised to not fast during the nine months as it can have adverse effects on their health. Therefore, it is important that one must first check with their doctor before making the decision for fasting.

Can pregnant women fast?

Long hours fasting with zero-energy food items is not advised to women who are expecting. Incessant hunger can hamper the development of the child. Therefore, pregnant women should consume healthy food at regular intervals. A balance of macronutrients and micronutrients is considered to be an ideal diet.

Fasting tips for pregnant women

Now that the nine-day festivities have already commenced, let us talk about the dos and don’ts that pregnant women must keep in mind while observing the fast.

1. Stay hydrated

First things first, it is very important to know that one needs to stay hydrated while they are fasting. It is all the more crucial when you are expecting. Therefore, to maintain a healthy mind and body during the auspicious nine days of Navratri, drink enough water and liquids. Coconut water is one of the best and easiest ways to gain hydration in the middle of the day.

2. Do not avoid carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide energy to the brain and muscles in the body, thereby making a person energetic and more productive throughout the day. Therefore, even when you are fasting during your pregnancy, make sure that one of your meals is rich in carbs.

3. Add seasonal fruits and vegetables

During the Navratri fasting, almost all the fruits and vegetables can be eaten. Therefore, try and add more seasonal fruits and vegetables in your fasting diet. They are not only nutritious but also a rich source of vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin C and potassium.

4. Maintain your portion sizes

You do not have to eat huge portions of food during Navratri because you may stress the body by overeating. Overeating can lead to indigestion and weight gain, especially if you eat a lot of foods that are high in sugar and salt when you are pregnant.

5. Stay active

When you are pregnant and fasting, it can be tempting to not move around. However, avoiding physical exertion can make you feel even more lethargic. Therefore, simple exercises like walking, and/or dancing can cater to benefit you during this time.

Who should avoid fasting?

It is suggested that pregnant women with illnesses such as diabetes, anaemia, and high blood pressure should totally avoid fasting as it could lead to various other complications that can cause difficulties in both mother and child.
