High blood pressure is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease. It occurs when the pressure of the blood against the artery walls is too high, leading to tissue damage. This, in turn, decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart, increasing the risk of heart problems. During the early stages, high blood pressure may show no symptoms, which is why it is important to identify the triggers for the silent killer. Having said that, the OnlyMyHealth team got in touch with Dr Vikrant Khese, Consultant Cardiologist, Apollo Clinics, Kharadi, Pune, to understand the factors that can lead to a spike in blood pressure levels.

Factors Responsible To Increase Blood Pressure Levels 

1. Stress

One of the most common causes of an immediate rise in blood pressure is stress. When you're stressed, your body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can cause your heart rate and blood pressure to increase. According to Dr Khese, this is known as the "fight or flight" response, a natural response to stress. However, if you're experiencing chronic stress, your blood pressure can remain elevated, which can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.

2. Caffeine

Caffeine is another common cause of an immediate rise in blood pressure. Dr Khese says, "Caffeine is a stimulant that can cause your pulse rate and blood pressure to increase. This effect can be more pronounced in people who are sensitive to caffeine or who consume large amounts of it."

3. Alcohol

"While moderate alcohol consumption may have some health benefits, excessive alcohol intake can raise blood pressure," says Dr Khese. Explaining further, he says, "Alcohol is a vasodilator, which means it can cause your blood vessels to widen. However, when consumed in excess, alcohol can also cause your blood vessels to constrict, raising your blood pressure."

4. Medications

Dr Khese is of the opinion that some medications can also cause an immediate rise in blood pressure. These include medications that contain steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and certain types of antidepressants. 

5. Smoking

According to the doctor, smoking can also cause an immediate rise in blood pressure. When you inhale cigarette smoke, it causes your blood vessels to narrow, which can increase your blood pressure. This effect is temporary, but if you smoke regularly, it can lead to chronic high blood pressure.

6. Certain foods

Your diet also has an impact on your blood pressure levels. Some foods can cause an immediate rise in blood pressure. These include foods that are high in sodium, such as processed foods, fast food, and salty snacks. "Eating too much sodium can cause your body to retain water, which can increase your blood pressure," Dr Khese says.

How To Lower Your Risk Of High Blood Pressure?

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that by living a healthy lifestyle, one can minimise their risk of high blood pressure. In addition, the US Health Body shares that by preventing high blood pressure or hypertension, one can reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. Here are some ways you can prevent raised blood pressure levels: 

  • Eat a healthy diet rich in green vegetables and fruits, and low sodium food
  • Avoid fatty, oily and processed food
  • Regular exercise
  • Quit smoking
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Say 'no' to stress
  • Get enough sleep
