Epistaxis And Summer: Know The Risk Factors And Tips To Prevent And Manage Nosebleeding From An Expert

Nose bleeding or medically called Epistaxis is a common problem is the summer season. Although epistaxis is seen in a lot of people, it can lead to higher discomfort and complications if it is persistent. A person's nose has many blood vessels present in the front and back of the nose. And, they are very weak and delicate so they bleed very easily. And not just adults, nosebleeds can occur in children as well. The symptoms can become concerning over time and may lead to blood loss, anemia, dizziness and fatigue. Onlymyhealth editorial team spoke to Dr. Samyuktha Samavedan, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Kondapur, Hyderabad, about the risk factors, prevention tips and treatment for mild nosebleeding at home.

Risk Factors of Epistaxis

According to Dr. Samyuktha, here are the main risk factors of nosebleeding

1. Persistent dry nose

Dry nose is a common cause of epistaxis because dry air causes the nose to become crusty and cracked, making it more likely to bleed when rubbed and blown. This usually occurs during dry weather.

2. Frequent Nasal infections

People suffering from these conditions have a tendency to blow their nose more frequently. During a viral infection, the inside of the nose may become irritated and tender, making it prone to bleeding.

3. Excessive Nose Picking

Cleaning your nose is a good hygiene practice but when it is excessively picked, it can cause trauma and cause nose bleeds. This is one of the most common risk factors of nosebleeding.

4. Seasonal Allergies

Seasonal allergies cause irritation in the nasal region, that can lead to continuous sneezing. Extensive sneezing can lead to nosebleeds. In such cases, you should surely talk to your doctor.

5. Trauma

Acute facial and nasal trauma commonly leads to epistaxis. If the bleeding is being caused due to a minor mucosal laceration, it is mostly limited in some time. But, advanced or extensive facial trauma can lead to severe bleeding which requires nasal packing. In these patients, delayed epistaxis may signal the presence of a traumatic aneurysm.

6. Blood Thinners

Blood thinners such as Aspirin, Warfarin do not cause nose bleeds by themselves, but they reduce the ability of the blood to form clots, hence leading to extensive nose bleeding.

Nosebleeding prevention tips

As per Dr. Samyuktha, here are the prevention tips for nosebleeding:

1. Don’t step out during the day

heat exposure

Avoid going outside in the heat. If it is urgent, cover your head with a hat and cover your nose with a folded kerchief or cotton cloth to keep hot air out. Avoiding heat exposure is extremely important to prevent nosebleeding.

2. Stay in a cool environment

Placing air conditioners and air coolers in the room helps to keep the air humid and prevents the nose from becoming dry. Therefore, you should try and stay in a cool environment to protect your nose from bleeding.

3. Keep the nose hydrated

Use a nasal spray or simple saline water to keep the nose hydrated that will help in reducing the dryness caused by the weather. Dryness is a major cause of nose bleeding and it needs to be avoided as much as possible.

4. Drink enough fluids

In the summer, drink plenty of water and other healthy liquids to stay hydrated and keep your nose from drying out. Drink atleast 7-8 glasses of water everyday and try and take fruit juices instead of carbonated sodas. This will keep your body hydrated and reduce the risk of dry nose.
