According to a recent study, a person with type-2 diabetes should consume eggs for breakfast. The study suggests that a high fat, low carb breakfast is better for a diabetic patient.
A diabetic patient has to be very careful about what to eat and what to avoid. The patient has to worry about the effect of the food consumed on his or her blood sugar levels. A type-2 diabetes patient makes insulin but the body of the patient is not able to use the insulin which is termed as insulin resistance.
According to a recent study, a person with type-2 diabetes should consume eggs for breakfast. The study suggests that a high fat, low carb breakfast is better for a diabetic patient. It will help the patient to control blood sugar levels throughout the day.
The study was published in the journal of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
"The large blood sugar spike that follows breakfast is due to the combination of pronounced insulin resistance in the morning in people with T2D and because typical Western breakfast foods like cereal, oatmeal, toast and fruit -- are high in carbohydrates," said Jonathan Little, lead author of the study.
Jonathan Little also mentioned that breakfast is the meal which can add to the maximum sugar to one's diet which can increase the blood sugar level of a type-2 diabetic. The research also suggests that when a diabetic patient consumes a low carb and high-fat breakfast then he or she can avoid a large intake of sugar throughout the day as it improves glycemic control during the day. It can further help the patient avoid further complications of diabetes.
For the study patients with well-controlled type-2 diabetes were examined. On the first day, they were given omelette for breakfast whereas on the other day they were given oatmeal and some fruits. later they were served identical lunch and dinner on both the days. A small device was attached to the abdomen of the participants to measure glucose level after every five minutes. The parameters like hunger, fullness and a desire to eat something sweet were also examined.
The study concluded that intake of a low carb and high-fat breakfast prevents the rise in blood sugar levels after breakfast and also helped in lower intake of sugar throughout the day.
