What It Feels Like For Young People To Have A Heart Attack: Early Symptoms To Note

Heart attacks are no longer a condition exclusive to the elderly, as they are increasingly affecting younger individuals as well. We still mourn the untimely deaths of actors like Sidharth Shukla (40) and Puneeth Rajkumar (46), who tragically passed away due to heart attacks.

As we all know, heart attacks are an unpredictable condition that can occur at any time and in anyone, which is why the key is to be vigilant and aware of the early symptoms and take timely measures that can help save lives. Keeping this in mind, we spoke to Dr Sanjay Bhat, Senior Consultant - Interventional Cardiology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, to understand the common factors that put young people at risk of heart attack and how to identify them if and when they occur.

Why Heart Attack Is Becoming More Common In Young People

While still relatively uncommon compared to older age groups, the rising incidence of heart attacks in young people is concerning, said Dr Bhat, attributing it to factors such as sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary choices, obesity, smoking and alcohol, stress, and, in certain cases, underlying health conditions.

Additionally, studies have highlighted how the COVID-19 pandemic also contributed to the increased incidences of heart attacks among younger individuals.

As per a study conducted by the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, heart attack deaths have significantly increased in all age groups in the United States of America since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Researchers found that this increase was most pronounced in people aged 25–44, with death rates rising by 23–34% compared to older age groups.

What It Feels Like For Young People To Have A Heart Attack

The symptoms of a heart attack may vary from person to person. In fact, studies suggest that they can be different for a man versus a woman. However, some of the common symptoms of a heart attack include:

  • Pain or discomfort in the chest
  • Pain in the upper body, including the back, neck, jaw, and arms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness
  • Cold sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Severe anxiety and panic attacks
  • A low-grade fever

Steps To Take In The Event Of A Heart Attack

According to Dr Bhat, time is of the essence in a heart attack.

Therefore, immediate action can significantly improve survival rates. He advised calling emergency services immediately. In the meantime, it can be beneficial to chew and swallow an aspirin (unless allergic), and if a person suffering from a heart attack becomes unresponsive, begin Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

As per the American Heart Association (AHA), CPR is an effective way to increase survival rates in people who have sudden cardiac arrest. In fact, it can double or triple the chances of survival for patients.
