Don Hasselbeck, Former NFL Tight End, Dies Of A Heart Attack At 70

Former NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck, known for his grit on the field and grace off it, passed away at the age of 70 after suffering cardiac arrest at his home. His son, former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, confirmed the news on social media, describing his father not just as a football champion, but as the “leader of our family.”

A Football Legacy Carved Through Grit

Don Hasselbeck was more than just a Super Bowl champion — he was a cornerstone of the teams he played for during his impressive nine-year NFL career. Drafted in the second round by the New England Patriots in 1977 after making waves as an All-American at the University of Colorado, Hasselbeck quickly proved to be a reliable and versatile player. At 6-foot-7, he had the size and skill to be a force on the field, especially during the 1981 season, when he led the Patriots with 46 receptions for 808 yards and six touchdowns.

His journey in the league spanned several franchises. After six productive seasons with New England, he joined the Los Angeles Raiders in 1983. Though he played only part of that season with the team, his impact was unforgettable. Hasselbeck not only contributed two touchdowns during the regular season, but also played a crucial role in the Raiders' 38-9 Super Bowl XVIII victory over Washington — a game in which he even blocked an extra point attempt.

He went on to spend a year with the New York Giants, adding a playoff touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers to his postseason achievements, before closing out his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 1985. By the end of his career, Hasselbeck had recorded 107 receptions for 1,542 yards and 18 touchdowns over 123 regular season games.

Beyond the Game: A Devoted Family Man

While his achievements on the field were impressive, Don Hasselbeck's most important role was off the gridiron — as a father and mentor. In a heartfelt tribute, Matt Hasselbeck highlighted his father’s many roles beyond football: “He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller.”

That legacy extended into the next generation, with two of Don's sons, Matt and Tim Hasselbeck, following in his footsteps into the NFL. Matt carved out a successful career as a starting quarterback, earning three Pro Bowl selections and leading the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2005 season. Tim also made it to the big league, serving primarily as a backup quarterback before transitioning into a broadcasting role.

Their achievements are often credited to the foundation laid by their father, whose leadership and values remained consistent through every phase of life.
