Dr Gaurang Krishna, Dermatologist and Founder - MedLinks, New Delhi, explained that when we don’t get enough sleep, especially not the recommended eight hours, we produce more cortisol. This hormone is important for regulating blood pressure and the immune system. 

Some of the other key points contributing to hair loss are mentioned below. 

  • The best time for our bodies to recover is between 10 PM and 2 AM. During this time, inflammation decreases, and our immune system gets stronger. 
  • However, if we are awake during these hours due to night work, we miss out on these benefits. Even if someone sleeps from 3 PM to 11 PM, it may not be as healthy as sleeping at night.
  • This sleep disruption can lead to stress and other health issues, including hair loss. 
  • Night shift workers should pay attention to their health and find ways to improve their sleep patterns. 
  • Taking care of our bodies is essential to prevent problems like hair fall while working at night.

According to the expert, the sun plays a crucial role in our overall health, including the health of our hair. “Our bodies are naturally linked to the sun's cycle, which influences our biological processes. When we sleep during the day and create a completely dark environment, it disrupts this natural connection,” added Dr Krishna. This disruption can lead to negative effects on our health because our bodies have not evolved to function optimally in darkness during the day. 

As a result, inflammatory molecules in our body can increase, which can worsen any existing hair problems. Therefore, maintaining a regular sleep schedule that aligns with natural daylight is important for overall well-being and can help prevent issues like hair loss.

According to a study,  Vitamin D3 found in the sunlight helps in promoting hair follicle health and suggests that Vitamin D supplementation could be beneficial for those experiencing hair loss related to sunlight deficiency. It illustrates the critical role that sunlight plays in maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels, which are essential for healthy hair growth and overall well-being.
