Does Losing Weight Shrink Your Libido? Expert Shares What To Do

Weight loss is often celebrated as a sign of improved health, better mobility, and boosted confidence. But for many, it comes as a surprise that instead of feeling more energetic or connected to their bodies, they notice a dip in their sex drive. The question is if it is all in the mind, or can losing weight really shrink your libido?

To understand what's really going on, we spoke to Dr Nanda N, Consultant, Adult & Paediatric Endocrinology, Kauvery Hospital, Marathahalli, Bangalore, who explained the science behind weight loss and sexual health, and what you can do if your libido is decreasing. Here is everything she shared with us.

Why Weight Loss Can Affect Your Libido

While weight loss is generally favourable, how you lose weight and at what rate is going to affect your hormones, mood, and energy levels, all factors that are directly related to sex drive. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Abrupt Calorie Deprivation Can Cause Hormonal Imbalance

Dr Nanda shared that big or quick calorie deficits can put your body into conservation mode. "When you're not eating enough, the body prioritises survival functions over reproductive ones," she said. This can reduce levels of sex hormones, such as oestrogen and testosterone, causing libido to dip.

2. Stress and Fatigue during Weight-Loss Journeys

For many people, weight loss is coupled with new exercise routines, strict diets, or emotional pressure. This often can increase cortisol, the body's stress hormone. High cortisol can make a person’s sexual urge dull and even disrupt sleep, which is another important determinant of libido.

3. Dip in Energy Levels

If your energy is constantly running low due to limited food intake or overtraining, your body simply doesn't have enough fuel left for sexual desire. Feeling tired, drained, or irritable naturally makes intimacy much less appealing.

4. Emotional and Body-Image Changes

After dramatic weight loss, individuals have reported still feeling self-conscious or disconnected from their body. "Body image plays a much larger role in libido than people realise," Dr Nanda noted. If you don't feel good in your skin yet, it may take time for your libido to bounce back.

Signs Your Libido Drop Is Weight-Loss Related

According to Nanda, here are a few signs that your libido drop is weight-loss related:

  • You have recently changed to a very low-calorie diet
  • You are losing weight at a fast rate, greater than half to one kg per week.
  • You are feeling abnormally fatigued, irritable, or tense
  • Your periods or hormonal cycles seem irregular.
  • You've intensified your workouts greatly.

If any of these sound relatable, your lowered libido might be a response to physical or emotional strain from your weight-loss routine.

What You Can Do to Bring Your Libido Back

Dr Nanda highlighted that a dip in libido due to weight loss is almost always temporary. She shared steps that can help restore hormonal balance and desire. These include:

1. Eat Enough and Balanced

Opt for a moderate deficit instead of steep calorie cuts, balancing your nutrients. “Aim for whole foods, quality proteins, healthy fats and regular meals,” Dr Nanda advised.

2. Prioritise Rest and Recovery

Sleep is not optional. Poor sleep lowers testosterone and raises cortisol, all of which are bad news for libido. Aim for seven to nine hours of rest. Avoid intense exercise daily.

3. Reconsider Your Workout Routine

Overtraining suppresses sex hormones. Incorporate rest days, moderate-intensity exercise, resistance training/weight training as it supports healthy testosterone levels.

4. Mindful Stress Management

Small changes make a big difference, Here is what you can try:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Yoga
  • Journaling
  • Brief respites from strict dieting
  • Lowering stress often brings libido back naturally.

5. See a Specialist If Symptoms Persist

If your libido has remained persistently low for many months, see an endocrinologist or gynaecologist/urologist. “It's important to rule out underlying hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies,” Dr Nanda concluded.

Bottomline

Weight loss does not shrink libido, but extreme dieting, rapid weight loss, stress, and fatigue do. All that's needed is to have a balanced, sustainable approach and listen to one's body rather than push it beyond its limits.
