Skin tags and warts, although they may appear similar at first glance, are distinct dermatological conditions with unique characteristics. Skin tags are small, fleshy growths that hang from the skin, while Warts are small, raised bumps on the skin. Understanding the disparities between the two can aid in proper identification and treatment. We spoke to our experts who shared insights on the same and listed the differences between the two.
Skin Tags
“Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are benign growths that often develop in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They typically manifest as small, soft, flesh-coloured or slightly darker protrusions attached to the skin by a narrow stalk”, said Dr Kuna Ramdas, Senior Dermatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad.
“Skin tags are non-contagious and painless, causing minimal discomfort unless irritated by friction or clothing. Common locations for skin tags include the neck, armpits, groin, and eyelids”, added Dr Ruby Sachdev, Consultant, Aesthetic Physician, Gleneagles Hospitals, Bengaluru.
According to StatPearls, nearly 50-60% of adults are predicted to have at least one skin tag over their lives, and the likelihood increases after the age of 40.
It is important to note that skin growths are more likely to occur in individuals who suffer from obesity, diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome (MeTS), or have a family history of skin tags. Also, both men and women are equally affected by skin tags.

Warts
“Warts, on the other hand, are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and can appear anywhere on the body. Unlike skin tags, warts are contagious and can spread through direct contact or contact with contaminated surfaces”, said Dr Ramdas.
Dr Sachdev added, “Warts vary in appearance depending on the type of HPV involved, but they often have a rough texture and may be flesh-coloured, pink, or brown. Warts can occur singly or in clusters, and they may cause itching or discomfort, especially when located on weight-bearing areas like the soles of the feet.”
According to a 2019 study, most warts don't cause any bothersome symptoms. Certain skin growths can give rise to itching, tightness, or a sensation of pressure. Warts can also be painful, especially those that appear on the soles of your feet. A wart may have black or brown dots that are caused by clotted blood leaking from capillaries (tiny blood vessels) located underneath the skin.

What You Should Know
While skin tags and warts may share certain characteristics, their causes, appearance, and behaviour differ significantly. Consulting an aesthetic physician for proper diagnosis and treatment is crucial for managing these conditions effectively.
The removal of skin tags is a simple and safe procedure when performed by trained professionals. However, it is important to encourage patients to make lifestyle changes to prevent the recurrence of lesions in the future. Warts, on the other hand, usually disappear on their own within a few weeks or months, but in some cases, it may take years. Although warts are not harmful, they can be unsightly and bothersome. As a result, many individuals seek treatment to get rid of them as quickly as possible.
