We spoke to Dr Ekta Singhwal, MSc Dietician, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, who explained the differences between dark and milk chocolate and which one is healthier.

Differences Between Dark And Milk Chocolate

Ingredients

The primary distinction between dark and milk chocolate lies in their cocoa content and additional ingredients. 

“Dark chocolate has a higher percentage of cocoa solids, usually ranging from 50-90%. This rich cocoa presence contributes to its intense and bittersweet flavour profile. On the other hand, milk chocolate contains less cocoa (typically around 10-50%) and includes milk solids, sugar, and often vanilla for a creamier and sweeter taste”, said Dr Singhwal.

Nutritional Content

When it comes to nutritional content, dark chocolate often takes the spotlight for its potential health benefits. 

Dr Singhwal highlighted, “Dark chocolate is a rich source of antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which are associated with cardiovascular health. In addition, it contains minerals, such as iron, magnesium, and copper.” However, it's crucial to note that the higher cocoa content also means a higher fat content, although a significant portion of this fat is heart-healthy cocoa butter.

Milk chocolate, while a delightful treat, tends to have higher sugar and fat content. The milk solids contribute to its creaminess but also add calories. The lower cocoa content in milk chocolate means fewer antioxidants compared to its dark counterpart.

Health Benefits

The consumption of dark chocolate, in moderation, has been linked to several health benefits. Consuming chocolate or cocoa that is high in flavanols has been linked to lowered blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health, according to Frontiers in Nutrition. Dark chocolate flavonoids may also have a positive impact on cognitive function, offering a sweet boost for the brain.

Milk chocolate, while undoubtedly enjoyable, may not carry the same health perks. "Its higher sugar content could contribute to increased calorie intake and potential negative effects on dental health. However, the creamy texture and milder flavour of milk chocolate appeal to those with a sweeter tooth", added Dr Singhwal.

According to a randomised crossover study by Nutrition and Diabetes on the effects of dark and milk chocolate, it was found that participants who consumed dark chocolate as opposed to the milk chocolate felt fuller and less hungry, and they rated their future food consumption lower. After eating the dark chocolate, ratings of the desire to consume anything fatty, sweet, or savoury all decreased.

Dr Singhwal emphasised, “While both dark and milk chocolates offer their unique flavours and characteristics, the key to adding them to a healthy lifestyle lies in moderation.” Dark chocolate, with its higher cocoa content and potential health benefits, can be a satisfying treat for those seeking a balance between indulgence and nutritional value. On the other hand, milk chocolate can be a delightful occasional treat for those who prefer a sweeter and creamier flavour.
