Heartburn commonly affects people at some time. Acid reflux is related to heartburn and is different from it. Though not life-threatening, these conditions can give a tough time to an individual suffering from it causing more severe conditions if not tackled at the right time. The LES can be described as a ring of muscles between one’s stomach and oesophagus. Thus, if the LES is weak or relaxes then acid can flow back into the oesophagus irritating, whereas, heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux. But, remember that not all acid reflux may lead to heartburn.

Lifestyle modification is vital to avoid acidity and heartburn. Adhering to healthy habits can help you keep acidity away. What one can do is that he/she should avoid laying down soon after eating, not to eat before hitting the sack, do not overeat, avoid mint, do not opt for large meals instead, eat smaller ones and frequently. Bid adieu to spicy, acidic and citrus foods that aggravate acidity. Say no to alcohol and smoking, and maintain a good posture and weight. Do not drink onion juice or tomato juice or eat raw onion. In case, you are taking medications that cause symptoms of acid reflux or heartburn then speak to your doctor about other options.  Moreover, elevation can also do the trick.
