The old standard 4-night skin cycle remains the same, with modifications depending upon personal skin requirements. Dr Sukanksha elaborated as follows: 

  • Night 1: Use a gentle acid like AHA/BHA to unclog pores and slough off dead cells.
  • Night 2: Retinol: Use retinol to stimulate collagen and promote cell turnover with retinol or retinoid.
  • Nights 3 and 4: Replenish and soothe skin with hydrating and calming products.

Dr Kulshrestha adds, “Now, when exfoliating at night, pair it with hydration and barrier repair and not just acids only. This reduces irritation and makes the skin firm.”

  • Acne-Prone Skin: Opt for a 3-night cycle with salicyclic acid for night 1, retinol on night 2, and a hydration product on night 3. “This is useful for reducing inflammation as well as clogged pores,” according to Dr Kulshrestha.
  • Sensitive Skin: For sensitive skin, the mantra is to be gentle. Use mild acids to use are mandelic or lactic acid. Replace retinol with bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative that mimics the same effect without skin irritation.
  • Mature Skin: Incorporate peptides or growth factors into recovery nights or apply richer moisturisers. Dr Kulshrestha added, “Don’t be afraid of oils or emollients as they help ageing skin beautifully.
