Sexual health is a topic that is often ignored or not talked about openly, but it is important to understand that it is an integral part of our overall well-being and happiness. To maintain good sexual health, we must adopt certain simple yet effective lifestyle changes into our daily routine.
We spoke to Dr Murugan Nandagopal, scientist and deputy general manager at LifeCell International Pvt Ltd, who explained these lifestyle changes and some hygiene tips for both men and women.
Here’s What He Suggested:
1) Exercise Regularly: Physical activity not only keeps our organs healthy, but it is also good for our mental health. According to Dr Nandagopal, exercise increases blood flow to the genital area, which improves sexual pleasure. "It also releases endorphins, mood-boosting hormones that can help reduce stress and anxiety, which can have a negative impact on your sex life."
2) Eat A Healthy Diet: A diet is said to be balanced not when it helps you lose weight or contains abundant protein, but when it includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. In other words, your diet should have all the necessary macro and micronutrients.

3) Get Enough Sleep: Sleep is essential for overall health, including sexual health. "Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue and irritability that negatively impacts your sex drive,” said Dr Nandagopal. So, make it a point to have seven to eight hours of sound sleep daily.
4) Manage Stress: Chronic stress can affect sex life by reducing libido and causing erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation. "Practising stress-management techniques, such as mindfulness, yoga, or deep breathing, can help improve sexual function," he said.
5) Quit Smoking: “Smoking affects overall health and reduces blood flow to the genital area, leading to erectile dysfunction and other problems,” explained Dr Murugan. “Quitting smoking can improve your sexual health and general well-being,” he added.
6) Cut Alcohol Consumption: While a glass of wine or beer may help you relax and set the mood, excessive alcohol consumption can negatively affect your sexual health. It can reduce sexual desire, impair performance, and lead to erectile dysfunction.
7) Communicate With Your Partner: Good communication with your partner is vital for a healthy sex life. Dr Nandagopal recommended that you talk openly about your sexual needs, desires, and concerns. "Listen actively, and be willing to compromise to find solutions for both of you," he said.
8) Practise Safe Sex: Practising safe sex, including using condoms and getting tested regularly for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) can help prevent unwanted pregnancies and infections that can affect sexual health.
Hygiene Tips For Men
Dr Nandagopal said that it is important to wash hands before and after cleaning genitals; pull back the foreskin and clean underneath it; and use a mild soap and warm water to clean the penis, scrotum, and the area between them.
Hygiene Tips For Women
"For women, maintaining good hygiene during menstruation is crucial, and they should use a mild soap and warm water to clean the genital area; avoid using scented products or douches; use fresh pads before going to bed; and wear clean and breathable underwear," said the expert.
