The monsoon season might bring respite from the scorching heat, but it also brings a new set of beauty troubles, and your hair often bears the brunt of it. With humidity levels skyrocketing and unexpected showers pouring, the scalp sweat gets too much to handle. Moreover, these conditions can turn your smooth and lustrous locks into a frizzy and tangled mess. Add frequent hair fall and sticky scalp to the mix, and it becomes clear, your hair needs a different kind of treatment this monsoon.

While all of us turn to salons to take extra care of our mane, not every treatment is best suited for monsoon. While choosing the right haircare treatment for monsoon can be daunting, it is important to know what’s best. To discover the best and worst hair treatments to get this monsoon, we talked to Sukansha Kulshrestha, consultant cosmetologist at IFAM Institute.

Why Monsoon Causes Hair Problems?

During monsoon, the scalp gets sweatier leading to oilier scalp, leaving the hair limp and frizz more persistent. This happens because rainwater is often acidic in nature and carry pollutants. Humidity weakens the roots, making hair more prone to breakage and seasonal shedding. This is why gentle care and moisture-balancing treatments are recommended.

Best Hair Treatments to Reduce Frizz During Monsoon

  • Go for Deep Conditioning Treatment: If dealing with frizzy and flat hair, get a nourishing conditioner targeting mid-lengths and ends to lock in hydration and tame frizz. Opt for a deep conditioning mask to lock in the moisture.
  • Scalp Detox or Clarifying Treatments: These treatments is best to deep cleanse the scalp buildup tht can occur during monsoon. According to Dr Kulshreshtha, “If suffering from ecxess oil, pollution and dirt, this treament can help. Moreover, this clean scalp and ensures better hair health and reced the chances of sweat-led infections.”
  • Hydrating Hair Spa: Frizz is one the biggest problems that comes with humidity. This type of moisture-rich spa treatment can help hair restore moisture and make the hair moe manageable.  “Look for treatments with ingredients like keratin, argan oil, or aloe vera,” said Dr Kulshrestha. 
  • Cysteine or Light Smoothing Treatments: Unlike chemical straightening and keratin treatments, this smoothing treatment helps bring shine to hair and alter the texture. “These are ideal during monsoon as they offer smoothness and shine without weighing the hair down,” advised Dr Sukanksha. 
  • Anti Hairfall Spa Treatment: Monthly Hair spa treatments can help restore moisture and strength to your hair. Go for protein or amino acid therapies to gain back texture and shine inyour hair while reducing hairfall.

Spa Treatments to Avoid During Monsoon 

According to Dr Kulshrestha, “⁠It’s better to avoid keratin or smoothening treatments during monsoon as they can damage the hair exposed to excesss moisture. Also instead of these treatments, go for nourishing home made mask to maintain the balance.”

Some Treatments to Avoid During Monsoon

  • Chemical Straightening or Rebonding: These are long lasting treatments but also need dry weather to et properly and give desired results. Meanwhile, humidity can damage hair and drain your hair’s hydration. 
  • Bleaching or High-Lift Colouring: Hair becomes more porous and vulnerable during monsoon. Bleaching or colouring might not give the desired result and could increase dryness and breakage.

How to Take Care of Hair at Home

Dr Kulshrestha recommends a few ways to take care of your hair at home. These include: 

  • Use more of organic or natural products or ingredients to reduce hair fall . Use hair masks once or twice a week for strengthening your hair roots. 
  • Regular shampoo and conditioning to eliminate oils, sweat and dirt. Use sulphate free shampoos to improve the texture of the hair, 
  • Try buns or tied up hairstyles to prevent from hair falling. 
  • Some low maintenance treatments to do at home may include:  hairstyling practises like buns, braids, regular trims to prevent split ends , leave in serums and use home made mask instead of chemical ones.

During monsoon, hair is already overwhelmed with sweat and oil leading to frizz and hairfall. To make it not become a problem, it is important to stick to a minimal haircare. To put it in Dr Kulshrestha’s words, “Monsoon isn’t the right time to take bold, high-maintainence hair treatments, instead opt for less is more approach when it comes to product appication.” Moreover, stay hydrated during summers as internal hydration affects overall appearance and health of your hair,” she added. With the right choices, your hair can stay strong, shiny, and rain-ready all season long.
