What Is Toasted Skin Syndrome? Doctor Explains How Continuous Exposure To Laptop Heat Can Harm Your Skin

Laptop has the word ‘lap’ in it. So naturally, there shouldn’t be any problem in using your laptop while keeping it on your lap, right? Wrong! However, alarm bells about the dangers of laptop heat on the skin have been proclaimed for far too long, this practice is far from being discontinued. To reiterate the same, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr G Manmohan, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda, who shared, “Continuous and prolonged exposure to laptop heat can cause a condition called erythema ab igne, or Toasted Skin Syndrome (TSS).”

Toasted Skin Syndrome

Toasted Skin Syndrome Caused By Laptop Heat

According to a study led by the American University of Antigua, TSS is an acquired skin irregularity caused by continuous exposure to moderate heat or infrared radiation. Published in the journal ‘Cureus,’ the study stated that historically, TSS was common among bakers and industrial workers. However, in the present time, novel heat sources like laptops and heated car seats have also been presenting cases of TSS.

Talking about the symptoms of TSS, Dr Manmohan said, “TSS results in persistent red, skin rashes which can lead to discomfort, soreness, itching, and burning.”

The study shared that although TSS can resolve spontaneously after removing the source of heat, but if you delay the diagnosis and continue unchecked, persistent exposure to heat sources, it may lead to permanent pigmentation or even skin cancer.

TSS is rare, especially when considering modern sources of heat and radiation, and takes up weeks to months of exposure to manifest. That is why it is important for you to be cognisant of this syndrome, so you can relay the same to your doctor in case you notice similar symptoms.

Some other sources of heat and infrared radiation besides laptops that can cause TSS are:

  • Space heaters
  • Heated blankets and vests
  • Sauna belts
  • Heated car seat

However, this may be a tough predicament for the working population who are continuously glued to their laptop, yet the downside just doesn’t seem worth it. Sharing some ways to prevent TSS, Dr Manmohan listed:

  • Cut down laptop usage time.
  • Opt for laptops with good cooling systems.
  • Have a barrier between the laptop and the skin like a pillow or desk.

Talking about the treatment of TSS, Dr Manmohan shared, “Dermatologists usually prescribe medications to soothe the affected area and reduce the inflammation.”

Erythema ab igne or toasted head syndrome is back in debate due to increasing clinical presentations of laptop-induced skin inflammation. For the working population, it is important to be aware of this condition as continuous exposure to heat and radiation sources can result in permanent disfiguration of the skin. It’s important to exercise preventive measures since the symptoms of TSS take a long time to show, and damage may be happening to your skin without you realising it.
