Everyone wants a healthy and even skin tone that extends beyond the cosmetic appeal. However many experience their skin getting darker after starting a skincare routine. Ever wondered why? Our skin plays a crucial role and acts as a barrier to keep out the external factors that can influence the skin's health. Therefore, there can be several reasons why the skin darkens after starting a skincare routine. We spoke to Dr Parmjit Singh Walia, Founder, Dr Walia’s Skin, Laser, and Hair Transplant Clinic, who explained the possible reasons behind it.

Possible Causes Of Skin Darkening

Skin Purging

Dr Walia said, “Skin purging is temporary, where the skin starts to break out or appear darker for some time. This usually occurs when active ingredients in our skincare, like retinoids or alpha hydroxy acids, accelerate cell turnover. Therefore, this leads to skin blemishes and discolouration.”

Sun Sensitivity

Most skincare products can make skin sensitive to the sun. Therefore, it is essential to wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily as the increased sun exposure can lead to skin darkening.

Overuse of Certain Ingredients

Dr Walia added, “Sometimes people overuse their skincare ingredients, thinking it will give quicker results. This leads to skin darkening, causing redness and irritation. Hence, it is essential to follow all the necessary instructions suggested by the dermatologist.”

Inadequate Hydration

People often neglect the importance of hydration when starting their skincare routine. Dr Walia noted, “It is essential to stay well-hydrated to maintain a clear complexion, as dehydration can also cause the skin to appear dull or even darker.”

Ingredients Allergies

Dr Walia said, “In some cases, new skincare products can also cause allergies due to the presence of ingredients to which your skin could be sensitive or allergic. It can lead to skin redness, irritation, or even darkening. Therefore, conducting a patch test before using any skincare products is essential.”

Tips To Avoid Skin Darkening

Here are some solutions shared by Dr Walia that you should if your skin is getting darker after starting skincare:

Patience

Once you have started your skincare routine, you must stay committed and have patience. Skin purging is a natural and temporary procedure that can eventually improve.

Sun Protection

Sunscreen is essential to any skincare routine. Always incorporate a broad-spectrum sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, which will help prevent further skin darkening. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, using sunscreen with SPF 15 cuts your risk of melanoma by 50% and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) by roughly 40%.

Review Your Products

Give a thorough check of the ingredients of your skincare products and if the product does not suit your skin, then consider switching to other alternatives.

Consult A Dermatologist

Consult a dermatologist if your skin darkens despite these efforts. They can provide personalised consultations and rule out any underlying skin conditions.

Bottomline

Dr Walia concluded, “Experiencing skin darkening after starting a skincare regimen is normal; many people face this issue. As for most people, their self-consciousness can be impacted because of uneven pigmentation or dark spots. The key is to remain patient, protect your skin from the sun, review your product choices, and consult a dermatologist if the issue persists.”
