When it comes to fashion, comfort and style often walk a fine line. One piece of clothing that has garnered attention in recent years for its potential role in causing discomfort is the bra. For many women, bras are considered a daily essential, but could they also be a hidden culprit behind chronic neck and back pain? We spoke to Dr Naveen MA, HOD and Senior Consultant Neuro and Spine Surgeon, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru, who explained if bras can cause back pain and the importance of choosing the right fit.

Causes Of Chronic Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain is a common issue that affects both men and women, but it may be more prevalent in women due to various factors, such as:

  • Breast Size: Larger breast sizes can lead to additional weight and strain on the neck and shoulders, potentially contributing to neck pain.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause, can affect muscle tension and pain perception, potentially influencing neck pain.
  • Posture: Women may be more prone to poor posture, especially when sitting for extended periods, which can lead to neck pain.
  • Occupational Factors: Certain occupations that involve prolonged sitting or repetitive tasks can increase the risk of neck pain in women.

Can Bra Cause Neck Pain?

Dr Naveen said, “Bras themselves are not directly responsible for chronic neck pain. However, ill-fitting bras or bras with straps that are too tight can contribute to discomfort in the neck and shoulders. When bra straps dig into the skin, they can create pressure points that, over time, may lead to neck pain.”

According to Sports Medicine, bras provide external breast support, but they can contribute to musculoskeletal pain in women with larger breasts. Bra straps, in particular, can cause discomfort by bearing the weight of breasts on the shoulders over extended periods, potentially leading to tissue damage and neurological symptoms in severe cases.

Dr Naveen added, “It's essential to ensure you are wearing a properly fitted bra to minimise any potential discomfort or strain on your neck and shoulders. As stated earlier, chronic neck pain can have various causes, and addressing issues related to posture, lifestyle, and overall health is essential in managing and preventing it.”

He further said, “While it’s important to consider the role of bras in neck and back pain, they are just one piece of the puzzle. Factors like posture, exercise, and overall health also play significant roles. The secret is to find the right balance between support and comfort. Opt for a well-fitting bra by seeking professional assistance to match your body's needs. Explore alternatives like wireless bras, sports bras, or bralettes that offer support minus the discomfort of underwire bras. Look for bras made from breathable, soft materials to reduce skin irritation. Seamless bras can also minimise friction. Frequent check is a must to reassess your bra size and comfort.”
