When it comes to enhancing libido naturally, fenugreek, also known as methi, has been gaining attention. Fenugreek is known for its aromatic seeds, often used in cooking and traditional medicine, fenugreek has a history of being a powerful herbal remedy. But can this humble herb truly help reignite your passion?
We spoke to our expert, Dr Shweta Jaiswal, Senior Dietician, Shardacare- Health City, to understand the science behind, its benefits, and potential side effects of using fenugreek to boost libido naturally. Here is what she shared with us. But let’s understand what fenugreek is.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant native to the Mediterranean region, Southern Europe, and Western Asia. Its seeds and leaves are widely used in cooking, particularly in Indian, Middle Eastern, and North African cuisines. However, fenugreek’s value extends beyond its flavour—it’s also revered for its medicinal properties.
Fenugreek seeds are rich in compounds such as saponins, alkaloids, and flavonoids. These bioactive compounds are believed to have various health benefits, including improving digestion, reducing inflammation, and, intriguingly, boosting libido.

Link Between Fenugreek And Libido
The connection between fenugreek and libido lies primarily in its influence on hormone levels. Fenugreek contains compounds called furostanolic saponins, which are thought to stimulate the production of sex hormones, including testosterone. Testosterone plays a key role in sexual desire for both men and women. Hence, Dr Jaiswal concluded, “Fenugreek shows promise as a natural libido booster.”
Additionally, a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition examined 49 athletic men over eight weeks and found that daily supplementation with 500 mg of fenugreek slightly boosted testosterone levels. Participants experienced significant improvements in strength and reductions in body fat compared to those in the placebo group.
Another study revealed that testosterone levels increased by up to 46% in 90% of participants taking fenugreek supplements. Moreover, most individuals in the supplement group reported enhancements in mood, energy, libido, and sperm count.
Other Health Benefits Of Fenugreek
Fenugreek’s potential to boost libido is just one of its many benefits. Our expert shared that the herb is also known for:
- Fenugreek is commonly used to increase milk production in breastfeeding women.
- Studies suggest fenugreek can help lower blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for people with diabetes.
- Its high fibre content supports gut health and can alleviate digestive issues like bloating and constipation.
- Fenugreek’s anti-inflammatory properties may help with conditions like arthritis.
How To Use Fenugreek For Libido
Fenugreek can be consumed in various forms, including:
- Capsules or powders are the most convenient way to get a concentrated dose. Look for supplements standardised for saponin content for maximum benefits.
- Add fenugreek seeds to dishes or soak them overnight and eat them raw for a milder flavour.
- Brew fenugreek seeds to create a tea that’s soothing and easy to prepare.
Additionally, our dietician suggested that when trying fenugreek, start with a low dose and gradually increase to see how your body responds.
Potential Side Effects And Precautions
While fenugreek is generally safe for most people, some may experience side effects, including:
- Mild gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating or diarrhoea.
- Allergic reactions, particularly if you’re allergic to other legumes.
- A maple syrup-like odour in sweat or urine (a harmless but notable effect).
- Pregnant women should avoid fenugreek as it may induce uterine contractions.
Final Thoughts
Fenugreek shows promise as a natural libido booster. However, while it may help enhance sexual desire for some, it’s crucial to note that it is not a stand-alone solution. Combining fenugreek with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and healthy stress management can maximise its benefits and support overall well-being. If you’re curious about trying fenugreek, speak with your healthcare provider to ensure it’s the right choice for your needs.
