Diet modification and choosing healthy foods can help to improve the condition of asthma. Vegetables, nuts, whole grains and unsaturated fatty acids are touted to help asthma patients.
The cases of Asthma are ever-increasing all over the world, the focus on whether some types of diet increase the risk of an attack has increased. Whether mere changes in one’s diet can bring about an improvement in Asthma symptoms is yet to be accepted as a treatment option in conventional medicine, but recent studies have shown that this is a promising line of research.
Studies support the claim of diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and unsaturated fatty acids to help asthma patients. Those with the such diet have shown better asthma control, i.e. improvement in symptoms of the disease as well as lung functions and decreased allergy symptoms. However, there's still no conclusive evidence to single out the effect of any particular ingredient in improving the asthma condition, i.e., reduce inflammation, curb free radicals and improve lung and immune system functions.
Some of the foods that should not form a part of your diet, as they exacerbate the condition are:
- Foods you are allergic to such as soy, shellfish and other fish types, sulphites, eggs and nuts
- Sulphites deserve special mention as you need to know the foods and drinks in which they are found. These food items are wine, beer, pickled foods, shrimp, bottled lime or lemon juice, processed foods and dried fruits or vegetables
- Avoid salt as much as possible. The amount of salt needed in your body can be easily obtained by some fruits and vegetables. Any consumption after that is not healthy for your body. High salt diet has been found to have a worsening impact on the condition of asthma. It restricts the ability of the veins in the lungs to dilate and release carbon-dioxide.Processed foods contain high amount of sulphite as well as salt, and that is why asthma patients must avoid them
