Coffee and Liver Health 

Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, widely known as TheLiverDoc on X, has shared compelling insights into how coffee benefits the liver. In a video posted on the platform, he explains that black coffee contains anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, and antioxidant properties, which significantly contribute to liver health.

According to him, regular consumption of coffee can:

  • Reduce fatty deposits in the liver
  • Lower inflammation and scarring caused by fat accumulation
  • Prevent the progression of fatty liver disease into cirrhosis
  • Lower the risk of liver cancer in cirrhosis patients

These benefits are largely due to the presence of chlorogenic acids and caffeine, which work together to reduce cholesterol levels, fight oxidative stress, and limit fibrosis (scarring of the liver).

TheLiverDoc even quoted the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) which strongly advocates coffee consumption for individuals at risk of developing liver cancer. Their clinical practice guidelines recommend that patients with chronic liver disease consume at least three cups of coffee daily to lower their risk of severe liver conditions.

Dr Philips further clarifies that the effects of coffee are not limited to just one form. Both instant coffee and freshly brewed coffee provide similar benefits. He states that one cup of coffee, equivalent to 100-120 millilitres, contains about 10 grams of whole-roasted coffee or 5 grams of instant coffee. Even decaffeinated coffee offers similar protective effects, making it a suitable alternative for individuals sensitive to caffeine.

How Much Coffee Should You Drink for Liver Protection?

For optimal benefits, Dr Philips recommends:

  • A minimum of three cups of black, unsweetened coffee daily
  • Incremental benefits up to six cups per day
  • The last cup should be consumed at least four hours before bedtime to prevent sleep disturbances
  • For those who find the taste of pure black coffee too strong, a zero-calorie sweetener can be used without diminishing its health benefits.

A common concern among coffee drinkers is its potential effect on heart health, digestion, and acidity. However, Dr Philips debunks these myths, stating that black coffee does not impact blood pressure or heart rate and does not contribute to reflux, gastritis, or stomach ulcers.
