But the oldest among them is of Ayurveda, ayurvedic treatment methods have been there for a long while even before the origin of allopath and homeopath treatment option. What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

It is a hormonal issue which occurs in women of age between 15-44 years. Polycystic Ovary syndrome affects a woman’s ovary which further affects their estrogens and progesterone hormones. This syndrome causes problems with menstrual health of a woman and can be a barrier for ovulation. Polycystic ovary syndrome affects the follicles and grows fluid-filled sacs inside the ovaries. Because of this the ovulation do not occur properly causing higher or lower progesterone levels than usual. Extra male hormones present in woman’s body due to this can result in irregular periods and disrupt menstrual cycle.


How Can PCOS be Treated by Ayurveda?

Ayurveda has different techniques to cure polycystic ovary syndrome, this involves ayurvedic medicines, therapies and diet routines. All of them together can help to treat this syndrome. It usually contains a combination of herbs which is very useful and does not have any side effects on the woman.

Medicinal Treatment

This method includes a combination of herbs which helps to cure polycystic ovary syndrome. It balances the hormones which because of this syndrome becomes higher or lower. The herbal medicine used for this is-

Ashwagandha- It is an herb which is widely used as a ayurvedic medicine to cure many problems. Ashwagandha helps to balance cortisol levels that improve the stress and PCOS symptoms. It is also called winter cherry. Ashwagandha can be taken in the form of powder or mixed with some warm water. It also reduces chronic stress during the process.


Cinnamon- It is harvested from the bark of the cinnamon tree. It is usually considered as a spice but it can do much more than adding taste to your food. Cinnamon can have a positive effect on insulin levels of the body which happens in the case of PCOS. It also aids in regulating menstrual cycle for woman with PCOS. 

Turmeric- This is very often used and given in most of the common diseases. Turmeric is an excellent healing ingredient which is used in number of treatments. It has an active ingredient named curcumin which has anti-inflammatory property. This helps to reduce anxiety symptoms in adolescent girls suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome.

Apart from medicines, there are programs and therapies which last for almost 12 weeks. These therapies along with medicine reduce the symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. This includes exercises and yogic postures mostly.

Ayurvedic Diet

Diet is an essential part of treatment because it determines the health and healing process of polycystic ovary syndrome. This does not have much to do with Ayurveda in particular, even your allopathic doctor might suggest you similar diet for PCOS. This includes-

  • Eat less of saturated food items, especially deep fried products and red meat.
  • Reduce salt intake of your body
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables than for high nutritional content.
  • Try to have natural sugar in minimal, avoid sugary food and fruits as natural sugar, artificial sweeteners and refined sugar.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Sub-fertility During PCOS

Sub-fertility is the stage when you try to get pregnant but because of symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, you are not able to. It can be delay is conceiving and cause problems related to it. For this there is a treatment called ‘Vamana Karma’. This means therapeutic vomiting, it can be done along with Ikshwaaku seed powder and Shatapushpadi Ghanavati for better result. This process may sound complicated but it is equally helpful. This helps to increase the chance of fertilization in woman trying to conceive. 


It can also be done through two other procedures which resolve sub-fertility issues due to PCOS, they are-

Shodhana – This is the process of detoxification and purification procedures

Shamana- The process of palliative treatment to reduce discomfort and relieve symptoms of PCOS

However this being said, Dr. Priyanka recommends choosing the fore mentioned method, as it is more reliable form of treatment.
