She explains that Ayurveda works on three characteristics in health issue known as ‘doshas’. These three describe the type of illness or problem the person is suffering from.
The first one is ‘vata’ which is associated with movement, space and air. Second in ‘Pitta’ that is related to metabolism, energy and water and the last one is ‘Kalpha’. This type is linked with body structure, earth and water. Constipation falls under the first category that is ‘vata’ because it is associated with movement. When there is an imbalance in your body due to movement then there is a probability of Constipation in the body. In Ayurveda, constipation problems are explained as imbalance in vata dosha. It can be treated through either ayurvedic laxatives or enema.
Ayurvedic Cures For Treating Constipation
Ayurvedic laxatives- Constipation is related to excess of cold and dry elements in the body. It can be cured through adding some warm elements which can add hydration and oils inside the body. Ayurvedic laxatives can be made into warm teas or can be taken in the tablet form with water. Here are some ayurvedic laxatives which can help treat constipation.
It is considered as one of the best Ayurvedic medicines. It can treat a number of diseases and health conditions. It is made from blending dried fruits from gooseberry, bibhitaki and haritaki plants. These fruits are dried and mixed together until they become in the powdered form. Triphala is very beneficial for treating constipation and does not have any side effect. Patient having constipation gets relief within the first weak and ends constipation in almost 2 weeks of time.
Triphala lowers the blood sugar, boosts weight loss and improves the gut biome by providing beneficial microbes for the body. It can be used to treat diabetes, constipation and obesity effectively. You can have it in the form of powder or have it like a tea in mixed in warm water. Add honey to decrease the bitterness.
This is a medicinal herb which is used to treat people having constipation. Senna stimulates the lining of the bowel which helps reducing constipation within 6-12 hours. This medicine should be taken in right quantity to avoid any side effect. If taken in the correct amount it can be beneficial for both children and adults. It should be taken less than a week, consult an ayurvedic practitioner for exact dose.
Senna should not be given to children below 2 years of age. Some people also experience stomach cramps after having it but the cramps go after a while. Senna should also not be given to people with health conditions such as
- Heart disease
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Intestinal blockage
- Anal prolapse
- Stomach inflammation
- Ulcerative colitis
Important point here is that senna lowers the potassium levels in the body; hence consult a doctor before taking it.
This is remedy for relieving constipation that contains one of the herbs present in triphala. Harikati which is also used in making triphala and trivuth (medicinal plants) that is a laxative is used to make herbolax. It is a laxative having antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties. The effectiveness of herbolax cannot be determined but most of the people who ate the tablets had some relief from constipation. This ayurvedic medicine is not meant for children and requires medical advice before taking.
Enema is basically a cleansing or purification method for the body. This process is completely health and beneficial, it is included in the panchakarma which is a group of five cleansing or purification treatments. Pachakarma is useful to eradicate toxins from building up inside the body and maintaining good health.
Basti is one of the treatments of panchakarma which is used for cleansing bowel through the use of medicated enemas. Basti contains herbal ingredients which are mixed in oil or ghee. This liquid flows through the tube that is inserted into your rectum. After a few minutes, you release the liquid into the toilet and you improve your bowel movement. The enema should be taken as per instructions of medical practitioner because the quantity for enema taken could be different for every individual.

Ayurvedic treatments can be very effective for treating constipation as they are made from natural herbs. These herbs are good for overall health of the person and most of them can be taken by both adults and children.
