Dealing With Appetite Loss During Pregnancy? Expert Explains Its Causes, Symptoms, And Management

Pregnancy is a time of significant change in a woman's body, and these changes can affect many aspects of health, including appetite. You may find that you are no longer interested in foods you once enjoyed or have a general lack of motivation to eat. While some women experience an increased appetite, others may face the challenge of appetite loss. We spoke to our expert Dr Vaishali Sharma, MD (AIIMS) COAG (Harvard) Senior Consultant Gynaecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Infertility Specialist, who explained the causes, symptoms, and ways to manage appetite loss during pregnancy.

Causes of Appetite Loss During Pregnancy

Morning Sickness

MORnING-SICKNESS

One of the most common reasons for appetite loss during pregnancy is morning sickness. “This condition, which includes nausea and vomiting, often occurs in the first trimester but can extend into later stages for some women. The discomfort from morning sickness can make eating unappealing,” said Dr Sharma.

Hormonal fluctuations in leptin and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during pregnancy have been linked to decreased appetite and heightened nausea and vomiting, according to 2011 research.

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy involves significant hormonal fluctuations, particularly in levels of oestrogen and progesterone. These changes can affect the digestive system and alter taste and smell, leading to a reduced desire to eat.

Stress and Anxiety

Dr Sharma added, “Pregnancy can be an emotionally intense time. Stress and anxiety about pregnancy, impending parenthood, and other life changes can impact appetite.”

Digestive Issues

Conditions, such as heartburn, indigestion, and constipation, which are common during pregnancy, can make eating uncomfortable and less appealing.

Symptoms of Appetite Loss

VOMITING-IN-PREGNANCY

  • Reduced Desire to Eat: A noticeable decrease in the urge to eat, even when hungry.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Persistent nausea that can worsen the thought of eating.
  • Fatigue: Feeling excessively tired, which can reduce the energy needed to prepare and consume meals.
  • Weight Loss or Lack of Weight Gain: Not gaining weight at the expected rate for pregnancy stages, or even losing weight.

Advice for Managing Appetite Loss

PREGNANCY-DIET

Follow these expert-recommended tips if you are dealing with appetite loss during pregnancy:

  • Small, Frequent Meals: Instead of three large meals in a day, try eating smaller meals more frequently. This approach can help manage nausea and ensure you’re still getting the necessary nutrients.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids. Sometimes, liquid-based foods like soups or smoothies can be easier to consume and provide necessary nutrients.
  • Healthy Snacks: Keep nutritious snacks handy, such as fruits, nuts, and yoghurt. These can provide essential nutrients without requiring large portions.
  • Manage Morning Sickness: To combat morning sickness, eat dry foods like crackers first thing in the morning. Ginger tea or ginger candies can also help reduce nausea.
  • Consult Your Healthcare Provider: If appetite loss is severe or persistent, it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider. They can check for any underlying issues and provide tailored advice or treatment.
  • Stress Management: Practise stress-relieving activities, such as prenatal yoga, meditation, or gentle exercise. These can improve overall well-being and potentially boost your appetite.

Bottomline

Dr Sharma concluded, “Appetite loss during pregnancy is a common issue that many women face. While it can be concerning, understanding the causes and implementing strategies to manage it can help ensure that both the mother and the baby receive the necessary nutrients. If you experience severe or prolonged appetite loss, seeking advice from a healthcare provider is crucial. They can offer personalised recommendations to support a healthy pregnancy.”
