When Robert Pattinson Had Body Dysmorphia That Lead To ‘Anxiety’: Study Reveals Link Between Anxiety and Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Robert Pattinson, the Hollywood actor known for his roles in ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Batman’, once discussed his experiences with body dysmorphia. He detailed how the condition led to anxiety it has caused him throughout his career. His candid reflections shed light on the pressures faced by actors in the entertainment industry regarding body image and societal expectations.

“Body dysmorphia, overall tremendous anxiety. I suppose it’s because of these tremendous insecurities,” shared the Batman actor revealing how body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) led to anxiety. Regarding the same, a study reveals the link between dysmorphia and BDD.

Is Anxiety Linked To Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

‘Relationship between Social Anxiety Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder,’ a study published on PubMed, claims that despite being two different entities, they conceptually overlap nosological entities. It highlights their similarities, comorbidities, cognitive biases, treatment outcomes, and cultural perspectives.

  • Researchers found that about 13.9% of the participants of the study had symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder, with many worrying about their skin and waist.
  • The study showed that students with BDD were much more likely to also suffer from anxiety, depression, and stress compared to those without it.
  • Female students were more affected by anxiety and stress related to BDD and the results highlight the need for better mental health support for those who may be struggling with similar issues.

As an Emotional Fitness Coach and NLP Practitioner, Shaikh Uzma Jamal, often observe that anxiety and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) share a deeply rooted connection in how individuals perceive themselves. She said, "both conditions are often fueled by cognitive distortions—patterns of negative self-talk that reinforce feelings of inadequacy. For example, NLP teaches us that language shapes our internal reality. A statement like “I look terrible” can perpetuate anxiety, but reframing it to I feel this way, but it doesn’t define me” can significantly shift one’s mindset. Combining awareness techniques, such as mindfulness, with structured approaches like CBT, can help rewire these negative thought loops, fostering a healthier self-image and emotional resilience."

How To Treat Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

According to research, the treatment for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) primarily involves two evidence-based approaches, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) medication.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy is the preferred psychological treatment that aims to help patients gain a better understanding of their difficulties.
  • It also reduces their preoccupation with appearance and addresses negative thought patterns.
  • CBT follows a structured protocol over 16 to 24 sessions, during which patients participate in graded exposure exercises to confront their fears related to body image.

Details about the other process, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRI) medications are mentioned below.

  • It includes various selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine, sertraline, and escitalopram, which have proven effective in treating Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
  • Research indicates that these medications can significantly improve BDD symptoms compared to placebo treatments.
  • SRIs are considered the first-choice medication for BDD, with many patients experiencing substantial improvements in their condition when treated with these drugs.

How To Treat Anxiety?

Treating anxiety effectively involves certain approaches that can be tailored to individual needs. Some of them are mentioned below.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): It is a common psychological treatment that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours.
  • Psychotherapy: Provides a space to discuss feelings and explore coping mechanisms.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity, such as aerobic exercise, can significantly reduce anxiety symptoms.
  • Relaxation Techniques: Methods like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness meditation help calm the mind and body.
  • Dietary Changes: Reducing caffeine and incorporating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can improve mental health.
