Anti-depressants May Increase Hip Fracture Risk in Elderly: Study
A recent study describes the side effects of using anti-depressant. According to the study elderly people who consume anti-depressant to are more likely to suffer from hip fracture after a fall.
Depression in the elderly is a common issue. It generally affects an individual at the age of 65 or more. It is a condition which should not be ignored. Anti-depressants are on the ways used to fight depression in elderly people. But consumption of anti-depressant can be harmful to one's health.
A recent study elaborates the side effects of using anti-depressant. The study states that elderly people who consume anti-depressant to are more likely to suffer from hip fracture after a fall.
The study was published in the Australian Prescriber journal. The findings of the study revealed that elderly who consume multiple psychotropic medicines which are mood and conscious medications are at a higher risk of hip fracture. These medications are used to treat various conditions. Not just depression this medicinal treatment is also beneficial for dementia.

"Anti-depressants, opioids, anti-epileptic medicines, benzodiazepines, which are used to treat anxiety and antipsychotics, which are used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder all increase the risk of hip fractures," lead author Libby Roughead from the University of South Australia (UniSA) said.
"Combining them increases the risk even further, up to five times in the case of starting anti-depressants and anxiety medicines together," Roughead added.
The study also calculated that this will add to one extra hip fracture to every 17 patients aged 80 years. Some preventive measures were also suggested by the study like reduced consumption of such medications, exercising more or switching to other option like occupational therapy or podiatry.

- Elderly people can also join some club or groups which will help them interact with people
- Can listen to their favourite music or watch a movie
