Anti-Anxiety Medication Side Effects: Young Adults Are Getting Addicted, Says Research
In the last 90 days, the prevalence of non-medical use was necessarily different when split by age category for alprazolam, especially non-medical use is more common among younger adults. But it's not with the case of diazepam.
Anti-anxiety medication side effects: There is always a concern about the misuse of the narcotic anti-anxiety medication because of the "high" it can create. Alprazolam (Xanax) is prescribed for psychiatric medication in the US.
A new study found by the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology claimed that the non-medical use of alprazolam in the United Kingdom is an important issue. Moreover, it appears to be more widespread in younger adults.
From a survey, the research examined results that included 10,019 adults in the United Kingdom. The estimated national prevalence of lifetime non-medical use of alprazolam and diazepam (Valium) was 0.32% and 1.30% respectively. In the last 90 days, the prevalence of non-medical use was necessarily different when split by age category for alprazolam, especially non-medical use is more common among younger adults. But it's not with the case of diazepam.
The writers also noted that the maximum individuals taking alprazolam for non-medical reasons are doing so without a prescription. Hence, before use, are unlikely to obtain medical advice. However, they wrote that further study is urgently needed to explore the appeal and motivations of alprazolam for non-medical use among growing adults. This will also enable appropriate public health interventions, which will help to prevent long-term dependence and short-term toxicity among young adults who are regular users of alprazolam.
Another research showed that the number of adults prescribed drugs in the class that includes Xanax rose by sixty-seven percent in the US between the years 1996 and 2013. Being mentioned in 2013, an estimated 22,767 people died in the US alone, due to n overdose involving prescription drugs.
Mentioning American rapper Lil Wyte's 2003 debut album 'Doubt Me Now' also had the song mentioning Xanax. The lyrics were as follows:
"Go on and slip me two Xanax bars
I'm ready to get full
Fifth of Crown to wash it down
I'm downtown snappin' rolls."
Talking about the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, it revealed that young adults were the most likely to have ever used alprazolam for non-medical purposes. Moreover, the shocking rate of abuse was for those aged between 18-25 which was 10.3%. It was also nearly double that for people aged 26 or over (5.7%).
