What Is Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical technique to treat blocked or constricted arteries. A balloon catheter is placed into the artery and inflated to enlarge it during surgery. This improves blood flow and aids in preventing a heart attack or stroke. The treatment can be performed with or without a stent (a small wire mesh tube that functions as a scaffold to keep your artery open).

Angioplasty is commonly used to treat coronary artery disease, characterised by plaque buildup in the arteries that can result in impaired circulation and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The doctor will utilise imaging technology to guide the catheter through the artery and reach the blocked spot during the procedure. Once placed in the correct position, the balloon is inflated to expand the artery, and if necessary, a stent is implanted. The treatment is normally performed under local anaesthesia. As per British Heart foundation, angioplasty may last between 30 minutes to two hour.
