Mindfulness meditation teaches the child to be fully aware of what is happening. This practice teaches humility, which helps children of all ages to remain calm, anxious and happy by assisting them in understanding the difference between feedback and response. Research suggests that mindfulness makes a person alert, controls emotions and increases self-satisfaction. It reduces nervousness and discomfort in challenging situations. Parents should know that the upheaval of pre-school classes can be pacified by adopting mindfulness practice for a few minutes daily.
Below listed are tips on how to teach kids the art of mindfulness meditation:
Doing it in front of your kids is the best way to teach them anything. Start a regular practice of meditation, which your child should also see. It is common for kids to pick things when they see their parents do so. This will make the child more interested in learning the art of meditation without imposing this thing on them.
Don't have expectations
It is necessary to leave behind expectations of any kind beforehand. Mindfulness cannot be taught or learnt without any effort. It is about 'being', not about 'doing'. If you are looking for results but lack patience, then teaching mindfulness to your child can be a significant task. Expectations reject mindfulness. Henceforth, be patient and let your child pick things on their own.
Mindfulness means taking a 'break'
A short break of five minutes can do wonders. Ask your child to close his/her eyes and take deep breaths five times at any time of the day. In the beginning, it maybe two minutes. For best results, try to do it at the same place and time every day.
Connecting with Earth
Focusing on a relationship with the Earth is a powerful engagement practice. Feeling your feet touching the ground calms the body. It is a beautiful ground experience. This practice can also be done while you take your child out for an evening stroll or a game at any park.
Soft toy meditation
This is an easy way to calm hyper children. Make the child sleep on their back with their favourite soft toy parked on their stomach. Watching soft toys rise and fall while breathing will pull the child's attention, leading to basic principles of meditation.
Food for the brain
Eating food has become so mechanical that it happens in an almost automated way. Parents feed the kids with their hands without thinking whether the child is enjoying it or not! Mindful food is food without any distraction. The only motive is to feel the food. Tell the children to greet the food, feel grateful and eat slowly.
A bedtime prayer is a must as it helps calm the nervous system and helps in getting sound sleep. Make it a habit for your child to sing a bedtime prayer before sleeping. This will inculcate a good practice in the child to sleep without any distractions.
