It is essential to have a diet rich in magnesium to counter several health problems. This vital mineral promotes healthy living, regulating the sleep, energy and blood sugar levels in the body. Our body relies on this mineral for complete wellbeing. There are specific visible symptoms that the body displays due to lack of magnesium in the body, which are as follows:

Sugar Cravings

The burning desire to eat some sweet can be a clear indication of a lack of magnesium in the body. Magnesium loss in women is connected to menstruation, and we all are aware of the cravings we get while on periods. Also, those into hard-core workout often feel the need for sugar as magnesium from the body is used while working out.

Muscle Soreness

If you have been experiencing muscle soreness regularly but are not hitting the gym, it could be the low magnesium levels to blame. As per a study carried by the Department of Paediatrics in Philadelphia Thomas Jefferson University, it was confirmed that muscle weakness is one of the most common signs of magnesium deficiency.

TIP: To reduce pains, try to massage the affected muscle in circulation movement for a couple of minutes every day.

Magnesium helps in relaxation, and lack of magnesium can lead to sleep troubles. Also, muscle soreness, coupled with lack of sleep, can lead to restless leg syndrome, an uncomfortable situation to deal with. Consult your doctor if facing such problems for complete cure.

Bone Problems

Magnesium deficiency can also lead to bone problems. Low magnesium in the body can make an individual prone to developing bone problems later in life. Lack of magnesium in the body is a cause of reduction of calcium levels in bones making bones brittle and weak.

Acid Reflex

Magnesium helps in releasing food and stomach acid into the oesophagus. So if the system lacks it, the process is reversed, allowing acid to enter the oesophagus. This leads to a burning sensation in the stomach, often called an acid reflex.

Stress and Apathy

We all have days when we feel low and exhausted and want to stay in bed all day long. However, if this feeling remains, there is a problem, and it may be related to the magnesium levels in the body.  Magnesium is responsible for building the strength of the nervous system, helping the mind and body relax. Insufficient magnesium leads to anxiety and constant stress. Visit a doctor to understand the reason behind anxiety as it may be purely physical and nothing related to your mental health.

If you’re facing any of these symptoms, then it is essential to have a magnesium-rich diet. Following foods should be consumed in case of magnesium deficiency in the body:

  • Green leafy vegetables like cabbage, spinach, etc.
  • Magnesium-rich fruits like avocado, raspberries, etc.
  • Dry fruits, nuts and seeds
  • Vegetables like peas, broccoli, beans etc
  • Dark chocolate
  • Tofu for vegans
  • Seafood including salmon, tuna and mackerel
  • Whole grains like brown rice, white rice and oats
